Kaieteur News- It seemed as if the Acting Commissioner of Police, Nigel Hoppie got upset yesterday over the media’s question about an alleged disappearance of reward money totalling $3M.
This assumption came after Hoppie “mistakenly” replied to the question posed by journalist Travis Chase in the Joint Services/Press Team WhatsApp group.
Chase had posed his question directly to the Director and Deputy Director of the Corporate Communications Unit (CCU) of the Guyana Police Force (GPF), Mark Ramotar and Stan Gouveia respectively.
Chase had asked “Morning Stan, Mark …… can you confirm that the $3-million-dollar reward in the Joel and Isiah Henry case was handed over to CID and that part of that sum- if not all disappeared under the watch of two very senior officers?”
The $3M reward that Chase was referring to was relevant information on the murder case of cousins Joel and Isaiah Henry.
Hoppie who is also member of the WhatsApp group responded, “Do not do any response”.
Hoppie deleted the message immediately after but not before Kaieteur News took a screenshot of the reply.
It is assumed that Hoppie did not know he was replying in the media group and might have thought that he was responding directly to Ramotar or Gouveia.
His response, however, was not taken lightly and was criticised in the group by other journalists including the President of the Guyana Press Association (GPA), Nazima Raghubir.
It was only on Tuesday last that the CCU had invited editors of the various media houses to a meeting. The meeting was held with the objective of improving the communication between the media and GPF.
Some of the concerns that were raised by the editors were top police officials such as Hoppie and others “dodging” the media, out rightly refusing to answer questions on key issues and not answering their phones.
The CCU had promised that it will relate the editors’ concerns to relevant heads of the Force in an attempt to improve the relationship between the media and the police. So far, it seems as though those promises will not be fulfilled because it appears as though top police officials are reluctant to change their ways.
One example to support this view relates to an issue raised by media houses during the recent meeting about the presence of a social media commentator in the WhatsApp group. Once again, the CCU had promised to address the concern and moved to delete the social media commentator from the group.
Much to the surprise and disappointment of many, the said person was re-added to the Joint Services/Press Team WhatsApp group.
