Having served in every other position on the executive before in the past decade, the one position that has eluded him from an administrative perspective was finally attained on Saturday morning last at the Racquet Center, Woolford Avenue.
By an overwhelming majority (17-5), Gordon Spencer was elected President of the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPLF) in a two-way clash with former PRO/Organising Secretary and Secretary (Ag), Runita White. Spencer has replaced Ed Caesar who held the post for the previous five years.
All but one of the previous executive members returned to serve, Andrew Austin who served as Treasurer before was elected unopposed as Vice President. With some not seeking re-election, they still indicated that they are willing, ready and able to serve once called upon to do so, including the past President.
Other members elected, all un-opposed were General Secretary Roger Rogers, Treasurer Candace Lam, Public Relations Officer/Organising Secretary Mark Seymour and the three Committee Members, Thruston Pearce, Franklyn Brisport-Luke and Brian Sukhdeo.
One area of contention during discussion of the various reports (President’s Report for 2020- Present, General Secretary’s Report for 2020- Present, Treasurer’s Report for 2020- Present)
presented was from the Treasurer.
The new President has undertaken to deal with this matter so that any doubts can be cleared up and then report back to the general membership. In his acceptance remarks, Spencer, whilst thanking Caesar and the rest of the previous executive members for serving the sport well, has promised to lift the standard of the sport throughout Guyana.
Acknowledging that athletes, administrators and other officials have all combined their efforts to bring the sport to where it’s at today, Spencer, also an IPF Level 11 Referee said they’ll continue in that vein.
“We’ll use this platform to continue to build. The important pillar in this federation is our athletes, and we want to give them all the opportunities available so that they can build themselves as sportsmen and women.
The intention is to work closely with all agencies affiliated with sports, sports management and health so that we can offer our athletes the best possible advice.”
Being a strength sports, Spencer noted that regular education exercises on eating right and caring muscles among other important areas would be pursued. The engaging of the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport as well as the Tourism Ministry would be done shortly, Spencer informed.
Meanwhile, Principal of the Kuru Kuru Cooperative College, Mr. Hansen Elliot, who conducted the elections, made an offer to the new body to provide training on accounting procedures and practices for the entire GAPLF Executive.
