“Young entrepreneurs are shaking the pillars of society and saying ‘I’m here to make a difference.’ I’ve seen persons who have spent all their days immersed in science, trying their hands at business and it is working out perfectly; and I’ve seen business oriented students making their own hair products and dabbling in the science, which is just awesome. This just shows that our young ones are diversifying and I think it’s beautiful.”

Kaieteur News – A purchase of beauty products from Amazon that went wrong was what prompted our featured young entrepreneur to launch her own business.
Twenty-nine-year-old Joanne Beejaimal revealed to Kaieteur News during a recent interview that back in 2019 she had made a purchase from Amazon of some beauty blenders. Upon receiving the items, she noticed that they were the wrong ones. “Basically I had so many of the wrong beauty blenders, I thought why not reach out to my friends and see who would be interested in buying them since I just wanted to get back my capital, to purchase the right ones,” she related.
Following this, she officially launched her business called ‘Flawless by Jo’ on February 15, 2020, with the help of close friends and family. She described her business partner, Danesh Persaud, as the “muscles” behind the business.
But before we get into the business side of things, let’s share a little bit about this young lady.
Beejaimal, who hails from the ancient county of Berbice, completed her secondary education at President’s College. She then enrolled at the University of Guyana’s School of Dentistry where she completed an Associate Degree in Biology. After that, she spent the next five years completing a Bachelors in Dental Surgery during which she got to work alongside some of the country’s renowned dental surgeons. Proving that hard work really pays off, Beejaimal graduated from UG in 2015 as a Dental Surgeon.
But she always had a love for makeup and it was her partner who encouraged her in 2019 to join a class to gain the necessary skills to become certified in this regard. She agreed and before long gained knowledge about the different products and their use so much so that she was soon giving makeup advice to others. When not ordering inventory, Beejaimal shared that she spends most of her time promoting her business on her different social media platforms – Facebook and Instagram. With support from a friend, she was taught how to brand her products. YouTube as well played a vital factor in helping her how to market her products.
With all the attention she was gaining at the time, she was invited onto a local live show hosted by Eye Candy by Mel where she was allowed to showcase her talent. From there, she was able to launch her own brand of cosmetics called ‘Flawless Cosmetics.’
“My very first product was the ‘We are Caribbean’ eye shadow palette. It is a nine-pan eye shadow palette that has the perfect mix of mattes shimmers and glitters. The shades are super pigmented and was described as ‘a little palette that packs a punch’ by one of Guyana’s renowned makeup artist,” the young lady related with pride.
But to own her very first palette was no easy task. According to Beejaimal, it took long hours of checking swatches, ingredients, sampling, testing and packaging. But she was willing to do whatever it took to achieve the ideal results. For her palette, a carnival theme was what she was aiming for.
“All the colours that I chose were vibrant, super pigmented and easily blended. I decided to name each shadow after places in the Caribbean,” she shared.
In December last year, she officially launched her cosmetics brand, which includes a wide variety of brush set, lip gloss, lip scrubs, water activated liners, mirrors and brush holders just to suit all different skin types.
The young woman, who has been gaining good recognition for her business thus far, stated that her support has been nothing more than overwhelming. Her family and partner, she noted, who were there supporting her before it all got started, were described as the root of her motivation. They, she said, inspired and guided her through the process.
Her many friends who are business owners as well have been nothing but supportive; they have been helping to promote her products as well.
Beejaimal hopes to one day open her own physical location where she can showcase her own brand. She also hopes to one day provide job opportunities to University students who may need that extra push. Like many local entrepreneurs in the makeup and beauty industry, the talented Berbician admitted that there have been times when she and her partner would be challenged to get the products ready in time to suit a customer’s needs. But knowing that they have each other, she said, keeps them working harder.
As for the COVID-19 pandemic, she said that, thus far, it has never really posed a challenge to the business. They however ensure that they adhere to all necessary precautions when they go about their business activities.
Benjaimal is of the opinion that young entrepreneurs are what the country needs and deserves. This just shows that our young ones are diversifying and I think it’s beautiful,” she expressed.
According to her too, young entrepreneurs, once given a chance to showcase their talent and evolve, can help to considerably boost the economy.
For those who would like to get their hands on Beejaimal’s beauty products, order(s) can be placed by visiting her social media platforms – Facebook and Instagram @flawless.by.jo and @flawless.cosmetics.gy, respectively.
