The Second Annual Golf Camp by the Guyana Golf Association and Nexgen Golf Academy, dedicated to former Coach Colin Ming got off to a fabulous start on Thursday at the Scouts Association of Guyana ground.
Joining the dozens of participants were members of the Ming family, Samuel and Stanley Ming who, while saddened by the loss, were heartened by the turnout and expressed their gratitude to the Academy for paying tribute to Colin. “This was exactly what my dad wanted to accomplish and seeing his first dream, that of golf being taught to young players is the gateway to fulfilling his second wish – producing a world class golfer from Guyana.”
Stanley Ming from Ming’s Products and Services said, “I can only wish that it was my brother standing here instead of me but I am impressed by the dedication and effort that Mr. Hussain has put into growing the sport around the country. This is unprecedented for a relatively unknown sport to become so dominant in such a short time. To see the sheer joy on the faces of so many young players makes me want to play myself.”
The well known businessman then went on to tee off the official start of the Golf Camp, joined by his nephew. The family pledged its continued support to the Academy in its quest to grow the game stating that additional equipment is already on the way.
The Golf Camp will also feature Table Tennis players from the Guyana National Team and the Titans Tennis Club. Coach Miguel Wong was there for the kickoff of the joint programme. “The concept of crossing over sports disciplines was discussed and this is the pilot project. By exposing the youths to a variety of sports at the same, we believe they can possibly get involved in sports they never imagined they would be good at.”
Golf has been growing well in Guyana with more than 5,000 school children being provided with equipment and training in preparation for CXC/CAPE examinations next year.
With the continuing support from the Ministry of Education Allied Arts Unit headed by Ms. Barker-King, Hussain said, “Plans are in place for training PE Teachers from an additional 50 schools in August, thereby allowing close to 10,000 students access to the sport.”
Hussain stated that it all started with an idea a year ago, which was supported by the Shafura Hussain Foundation, Anwar Buddy Shaffie, former Coach Colin Ming and a few overseas Guyanese golfers, that led to the current state of affairs with dozens of corporate sponsors such as Assuria General Insurance; Copa Airlines; Blue Life Waters; Trophy Stall; Ansa Mcal; Toolsie Persaud; Kanuku Suite & Apartments; Kanuku Tours; Angel Seafood Restaurant & Bar; Sunshine Snacks; Ram & McRae; Puran Brothers; Crown Mining; Panko Steel Construction; H. Nauth & Sons; AR Printery; Bissessar Shipping Company; CS World Cargo & Logistics; Sterling Products; Caliper Drones; PasCargo; New Trend Auto; Maraiko Bay Resorts; Shafura Hussain Foundation; and NexGen Global Group now involved.
Plans are being made to host additional Golf Camps during the rest of the year in Berbice, Linden, Essequibo, West Coast and Georgetown. “These will be two and three day camps in various regions so that all kids are given the opportunity to learn from the top coaches in the country.”
Hussain emphasized that without the help from Coach Dr. Joaan Deo and Captain Chen Deo who helped to design the training programme and worked tirelessly with the Academy during the past year, this Camp could not have been a success.
“We are fortunate to have tremendous talent such as Coaches Miguel Wong and Christine Sukhram join myself and Dr. Joaan Deo to take these kids to their full potential,” said Hussain.
The Golf Camp will conclude on Saturday July 17th with a skills competition that will include both kids and parents.
The Academy has a lighted Driving Range that is open daily from 9 am to 8 pm and offers extremely low rates and provides all equipment and training for everyone.
Anyone interested in future activities, Golf Camps, or learning the game can contact the Academy via WhatsApp 668-7419 or nexgengolfacademy on Facebook and Instagram.
