Dear Editor,
Brothers and sisters, we are being exploited by the very people that we elect to protect us, to protect our interest! Imagine Exxon Mobil announced that the third oil ship will cost 200 billion dollars – who is responsible for reviewing these purchases?
What is more alarming is that they are borrowing this money from 11 international banks, and we are yet to know the interest rates on the money, which they borrowing on our behalf. According to a study done by Statista (a leading provider of market and consumer data), less than half of Guyana’s population have internet access. This means with the Covid-19 pandemic that caused the schools to close, more than half of our children are not able to access online schooling, which will make it worse for our economy if our youths are not being properly educated. Every day, food prices are rising, yet our government can’t seem to get the natural resources contracts so that citizens of this rich country won’t have to suffer.
Kaieteur News reported on June 26 that a rice farmer that planted 195 acres of rice that was affected by the flood, was discovered by his maid hanging from the ceiling; he committed suicide because of the amount of money, which he owes the bank and IPED. Where are our government bailout policies?
These financial gurus who claim to go all over the world to study and get their fancy Ph.D. and degrees, aren’t doing anything to protect our people. Now I hear they want to create a new police division or something like that so that they can fight crime. In any country where there is extreme poverty like Guyana, there will be high crime rates. With a poverty rate of 47.5 percent, we are bound to have high crime rates. What about feeding programmes, what about paid learning programmes? What about social initiatives that will allow people to be able to maintain themselves and their families?
How do you sleep at night? Political leaders were sworn in using the Bible, Quran, or Bhagavad Gita just to go in there to do nonsense. Do you have any shame? Just playing the blame game and pulling out the race card all the time, rich rich country like our own taking billions of dollars in loans, next thing you know, there will be taxes on everything which will cause prices to raise again. This will cause our people to get little hope thinking that they will get some relief, all we are getting is high taxes, come on man.
So ExxonMobil submitted an application for a gas-to-energy project, a plant to process the natural gas that they are flaring every day. The plant is supposed to supply the country with a cheaper alternative to the fuel, which we use right now to power the country. The EPA ordered them to do an Environmental Impact Assessment and they are giving Guyanese 28 days to submit the subjects that we want them to access, is that fair brothers and sisters? You can’t even throw a party in 28 days, but they want us to come up with subjects in such a short space of time. That is just ridiculous; we need to do better Guyana!
Yours truly,
