After making 18 from 10 balls for Peshawar Zalmi in last week’s final of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) in Abu Dhabi in a losing cause, Guyanese Sherfane Rutherford is expected home next month and his next assignment will be the 2021 Caribbean Premier League (CPL), scheduled for August 26 to September 15.
Rutherford confirmed that he has been traded to the Patriots, from the Guyana Amazon Warriors. The 22-year-old from Enmore on the East Coast of Demerara joins Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo, Fabian Allen, Evin Lewis, Sheldon Cottrell and Joshua da Silva in very strong Patriots unit.
“For me, playing cricket during the pandemic and having to stay in a bubble is one of the hardest things I’ve ever experienced. But I am happy that I am getting the opportunity to play some cricket, which means that despite being confined and whatever else comes with being in a bubble, I need to find ways to enjoy myself,” said Rutherford.
Rutherford, who has played six T20 internationals for the West Indies since making his debut against Bangladesh in Dhaka in 2018 but who has not played since January 18 when West Indies beat Ireland by nine wickets in St Kitts, thanked God for the opportunity to play in the PSL.
“My PSL performance…I would say is one of the best and also is one for me to learn from moving forward as well.
Playing a final is always a big achievement giving the fact that was our aim at the beginning of our team’s journey. And even though we didn’t get over the line I think we showed great fight… but credit to Multan Sultans who outplayed us” informed Rutherford, who blasted four sixes and two fours in 56 from 40 balls to post his maiden half-century in the PSL.
“Getting my first PSL fifty is a big achievement for me and definitely one to cherish,” said Rutherford who has made his mark around the globe, playing for Guyana Amazon Warriors, Khulna Titans, Delhi Capitals, Sylhet Thunder, Karachi Kings, Mumbai Indians, Edmonton Royals, Sydney Sixers, Bengal Tigers and Peshawar Zalmi.
“I will focus now on doing well for my new CPL team and should learn a lot from players like Chris Gayle about batting and DJ Bravo with the bowling,” said Rutherford who was the leading run-scorer for the West Indies B Team in the inaugural edition of the Global T20 Canada tournament in June 2018.
Rutherford, who represented Guyana at the U-15 level in 2012 before playing at the U-17 and U-19 levels before making his First-Class debut when Guyana played the Windwards at Providence in April 2017. In 17 First-Class matches he has made 486 runs with three half-centuries including a highest score of 93. He also captured 33 wickets with best of 6-32.
His List ‘A’ debut for Guyana came a year later when the Jaguars played English County Kent in January 2018 and in 20 List ‘A’ games he has scored 388 runs with two fifties.
The pugnacious left-hander, who bowls right-arm medium pace, has played in 61 T20 matches globally; scoring 901 runs with two fifties and reached the boundary 57 times and cleared it on 60 occasions.
Rutherford is not contracted by the Cricket Guyana INC Franchise but he is still desirous of playing for Guyana and the West Indies.
“To be honest, Test cricket in my heart, I love Test cricket so I don’t think that will ever change,” said Rutherford, who last played First-Class cricket when Guyana opposed Trinidad at Providence from March 7-9, 2019.
Rutherford has not been contracted or included in the Guyana Jaguars 15-man for upcoming Regional season, but former Guyana and West Indies Captain and Chairman of Guyana Cricket Board Ramnaresh Sarwan says he still can be picked as a pay-for-play.
“Of course he can be picked for Guyana despite him not being among the contracted players…we are not ruling out anybody.
What we want is to form a core group of guys together and in the case of Rutherford, he has a lot of cricket ahead of him. Not only white-ball cricket but four-day as well, once he gets himself together.
I did reach out to him and I will reach out to him again and try to convince him of the importance of him playing all three formats,” said Sarwan, on a recent Radio programme.
After playing the last of his six T20Is against Ireland, Rutherford was not selected at the International level again but it is understood that Rutherford was omitted early in 2000 for not making the fitness mark and he has not tried to achieve it since then.
