Kaieteur News – The Guyana Golf Association and the NexGen Golf Academy will host a Golf Camp at the facility on Woolford Avenue from July 1st to July 17th for new players of all ages with experienced players also given an opportunity to hone their skills.
It is hoped that this will give the Guyana Golf Association the foundation for the selection of players to start building a National Team that will represent the country at upcoming events.
This is the second Annual Golf Camp and it will be dedicated to former Coach and sponsor of the Academy, the late Colin Ming. Mr. Ming was an avid promoter of sports among youths and a dedicated coach who had a dream of producing a PGA golfer from our shores. Samuel Ming said “This is something my dad was happy to be a part of and we wish the Academy every success and will support them as they work to carry out his desires.”
It was last July that Colin Ming and Neil Jones, donated hundreds of junior golf clubs to fellow Queen’s College alumni Aleem Hussain, to ensure that youths would have access to equipment to learn the sport.
That was a part of the reason which golf has grown so much as it helped lead to the implementation of the sport in 51 schools to date (an additional 50 set to be added in August) and more than 5,000 students having access to the game in less than 12 months.
The Golf Camp is sponsored in part by Assuria General Insurance; Copa Airlines; Blue Life Waters; Trophy Stall; Ansa Mcal; Toolsie Persaud; Kanuku Suite & Apartments; Kanuku Tours; Angel Seafood Restaurant & Bar; Sunshine Snacks; Ram & McRae; Puran Brothers; Crown Mining; Panko Steel Construction; OES; H. Nauth & Sons; AR Printery; Bissessar Shipping Company; CS World Cargo & Logistics; Sterling Products; Caliper Drones; PasCargo; New Trend Auto; Maraiko Bay Resorts; Shafura Hussain Foundation; and NexGen Global Group.
These companies are amongst the major sponsors of Golf in Guyana, and will assist in the donation prizes and trophies, as well as provide 25 spots for under-privileged youths at no cost.
This will continue the tradition started by Christopher Ram (Ram & McRae) and Ramesh Dookhoo (Banks DiH) earlier this year when they partnered with the Academy to offer free lessons for underprivileged children.
All clubs and balls, along with water and a snack daily will be provided by the Academy. Warm up drills will conducted by Coach Miguel Wong, who along with members of the Titans Table Tennis Club and the Guyana National Team, will also provide Free Table Tennis instructions.
Registration for the programme, which has a nominal cost of $8,000, ends on June 30th. Timings for the classes are Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-6pm and on Saturday July 17th will be the skills competition and graduation where each participant will receive a certificate, goody bag and top players will get medals and trophies.
In addition, there will be an aerial show with Drones/Model Airplanes; Demonstration by the Archery team; Demonstrations by The Titans Table Tennis Club during Week 2 where children can participate; and all parents will have a chance to putt to win prizes as well. And to top it off, there will an Ice-cream Day provided by Sterling Products.
Coaches for the Camp are GGA President Aleem Hussain, Christine Sukhram (9-time Guyana Women’s Champion), Dr. Joaan Deo (2- time Guyana Open & Suriname Ladies Champion) and Miguel Wong (Guyana’s Highest Ranked Male Table Tennis Player and German League Pro).
Golf is one of the few fully Covid-19 compliant sports and all guidelines are being observed.
