Kaieteur News – Underground water springs are holding up the emergency road works being done in Region Ten according the Ministry of Public Works. Last Wednesday, the Washer Pond Road in Linden, Region 10, in the vicinity of the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) was closed to vehicular traffic due to the road works being carried out by the Ministry. Traffic was diverted along the Noitgedacht Road, which was also recently rehabilitated. The project was visited on Friday and the Ministry’s Engineer, Colin Gittens, pointed out a continuous flow of water emanating from the subsurface of the road.
The Minister, Bishop Juan Edghill, stated to this publication that two underground water springs were discovered and they are trying to find solutions to the issue. Edghill further stated that work has been done on the drains around the area to prevent the said issue.
Kaieteur News understands that the engineer has already ordered the problematic sections of the road to be dug up and properly addressed before bringing the surface to its reported final surface thickness of three inches of asphalt cover.
Regional Chairman, Deron Adams, urged the team to come up with a solution that would see the preservation of the road beyond the time span obtained in recent past rehabilitation efforts at that location.
This roadway, extending from the highway along Sir David Rose Avenue, along the Washer Pond Road and across the Wismar Bridge along the Winifred Gaskin Highway onto the road leading to Brazil was referred to in the past as the Federal Highway, for which responsibility for upkeep and maintenance falls to the Ministry of Public Works. Minister Edghill stated that he is unsure of whether the issue with the underground water springs will cause the road closure to be extended.
