Kaieteur News – Three men were killed yesterday after a fuel boat, Canada Club Georgetown, exploded. The boat was moored at a wharf located at Friendship on the East Bank of Demerara (EBD).
Police identified the dead men as Seenarine Persaud, Mark Mangal and Damon Denia. The explosion, according to investigators, took place sometime between 16:40hrs. and 17:30hrs.
Kaieteur News was told that the men are residents of Riverstown, Essequibo, and was the only persons onboard the vessel at the time.
This newspaper understands that it was a security guard working at the wharf who heard the loud explosion. He reportedly stepped away from his post to investigate the sound and noticed thick black smoke emanating from the bow of the vessel.
The security reportedly alerted his superiors along with the relevant authorities.
Up to press time, investigators related that it is not clear as to what caused the explosion, which reportedly took place at the vessel’s bow; however, the Guyana Fire Service was conducting the necessary investigation to determine its origin.
Additional information received by this media house from reliable sources detailed that the vessel was empty of cargo at the time leaving many puzzled as to what really caused the explosion. This newspaper learnt that the vessel is used to transport fuel for the Guyana Oil Company (Guyoil) and the Guyana Power and Light Incorporated (GPL).
Investigations are ongoing.
