Kaieteur News – When the Los Angeles Lakers crashed out of the NBA tournament, Anthony Davis in response to criticism of his role said, “I don’t need to prove anything to anyone and I’m not going to prove anything to anyone.”
Davis was born long after I felt that way and had used those words as a social activist, UG academic and newspaper columnist. In my long years in the public limelight, I watched this nasty, hypocritical society shower praise on people who would fail any test of moral uprightness. Guyana has been like that and is like that.
I have sustained ugly criticisms the past decades from people whose words sprout caring sentiments but whose character doesn’t possess an ounce of the caring quality that humane people should embody. This is the society I saw since I became a UG freshman in 1974. This side of Guyana hasn’t changed since.
I have never written on something I am about to announce here. Do you know for the past 20 years the publisher of this newspaper, Glenn Lall, received from power-wielders from the PPP, PNC, AFC, civil society, women groups, business folks and from UG, countless complaints about the contents of my columns that have urged Mr. Lall to stop the column?
When you hear the names of these people, you will have contrasting emotions – both laughter and annoyance. These were people not fit to criticise a columnist who has never harmed a soul while their policies hurt other people. They would call Mr. Lall and rage on. Then the next week, they would do something for which the entire society should ostracise them.
One night I walked into Kaieteur News. Mr. Lall and Adam Harris were laughing. Adam Harris has a phenomenal sense of humour. Lall said he cannot show me the entire letter but just the part that I need to see; the part that he and Harris found hilarious. The letter was written by one of Guyana’s most prominent lawyers who was once a PPP bigwig.
Here are the words, “… you lied to me; you had no intention of ever firing Freddie Kissoon.” This gentleman wanted Lall to stop the column because of my criticism of him. This very gentleman is respected by the very people who couldn’t be bothered with his authoritarian instinct and his intolerance of free speech.
The letter is in Kaieteur News’ file but if I name him, I will get a libel writ. He wanted to be president of Guyana but that was scientifically impossible. Do you know how I came to stop doing columns for the Stabroek News? I discovered a powerful WPA woman had secret connections with the PNC.
I wrote about it. She went to her friend, co-founder of the Stabroek News, Miles Fitzpatrick (deceased) who insisted to David DeCaires that he drop the column. These are the people who we were told fought for democracy under President Burnham. Someone in the WPA was involved in Rodney’s assassination.
A clerk, when he was a 17-year-old employee at Bookers Store in the 1950s, stole a packet of bicycle tube, was arrested and placed before the courts. When I was the same age, I stole books from the national library. In a civil matter in court in which he was the opposing lawyer, he kept shouting out in court with a broad smile, looking at me directly and speaking so the judge can hear, “I’m a book thief, I’m a book thief.”
He did not sing for the judge the words, “I am a bicycle tube thief.” If he had stolen the philosophy books I did, then he would have appreciated the value of freedom and not advice Forbes Burnham on how to jail and murder people.
Some of the condemnations of me have come from people whose minds are far uglier than mine. These are the people who are openly praised all the time in Guyana but their moral values are questionable. They continue to penetrate society and the society welcomes them, not even for a moment reflecting on the appalling double standards of these soulless creatures.
I have pontificated for more than 19 months since December 2018 on the serendipitous effects of the no confidence motion and the five-month election catastrophe. All young people who love this country and will continue to love it have now seen for themselves the nature of the beast.
Those they looked up to, those who are supposed to be urbane, cultured, soft spoken, educated with societal recognition and national status oozing from them, have turned out to be narrow-minded demonic creatures who were prepared to destroy this country for their depraved, degenerate agenda. Race, partisan politics and anti-PPP hatred were put before love of country.
