“Young entrepreneurs play an important role in society because many entrepreneurs have businesses that have inspired other young persons to build on their ideas or talents to establish their own businesses.”

Kaieteur News – Many young men and women in business in our society today have proven that age is just a number and therefore does not determine the level of one’s success. They are passion-driven go-getters who are helping to change our economy for the better.
Alexandra Willabus, founder and owner of ‘Eccentric Creations’ and ‘Majestic designs and Accessories.’
Currently taking the business industry by storm is 21-year-old Alexandra Willabus. Her dexterity is what is shaping her into the successful businesswoman that she hopes to become.
Willabus is the founder and proud owner of “Eccentric Creations,” a local arts and craft business that provides accessories for women, men and children. Not only that, she is also the owner of another small business called “Majestic designs and Accessories” which provides dance instrument and accessories for Christian dancers.
During an exclusive interview with Kaieteur News, the young entrepreneur revealed that after attending an annual church fair in 2018, which had given her the exposure to exhibit her products, she officially launched her business in August of that year.
According to the young woman, her passion and the love for arts and craft is what had inspired her to start a business. “It has continued to push me to build on my creativity and talent to produce even more unique accessories, some of which are not found in Guyana,” the 21-year-old shared.
For Willabus, it is the authenticity she brings to the table that leaves people mesmerised with her pieces. Her business, which provides a wide variety of accessories, are made with materials such as African print fabric, beads, wire and ribbons. Among her creative pieces are necklaces, earrings, bands, purses, brooches and hair accessories. The colourful pieces with unique designs that she produces always succeed in attracting customers, she noted.
According to this talented entrepreneur, her support base has been tremendous, since not only locals, but people from abroad have been gravitating to her business. Recognising the appreciation for her handiwork, Willabus said that she decided to introduce a physical store with more choice pieces for her customers.
When COVID-19 entered our shores last year, the fledgling entrepreneur said that her business, like the rest of the sector, was impacted.
But Willabus admitted that the impact has been both positive and negative.
She stated, “at the beginning of the pandemic, the COVID-19 guidelines and restrictions caused a drop in customers’ support and purchases, but it also gave me time to produce new accessories to add to our products list which in turn, created a spike in sales after a few months.”
Another challenge to her production, she related, was the sourcing of materials, especially beads and African prints, to suite customers’ needs.
This young innovator is currently a final year student at the University of Guyana pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in International Relations. She has, moreover, been challenged to balance her studies and the business. She shared that sometimes the business would have to be closed or she has to put aside orders so that she can focus on an assignment or to prepare for an exam. Despite the obstacles, she still pushes ahead.
Willabus is of the firm opinion that young entrepreneurs, such as herself, are crucial to the growth and development of our society. According to her, “young entrepreneurs play an important role in society, because many entrepreneurs have businesses that have inspired other young persons to build on their ideas or talents to establish their own businesses.” On that note, she is encouraging young persons to develop and build on their talent(s) and despite what challenges they face, they should keep pushing for success.
In concluding, she noted that even though there are many resources available to entrepreneurs to help build their businesses, training exercises and conferences on how to manage finances and customer services can go a long way. Added to this, she said, that networking with other small business and entrepreneurs should also be encouraged.
