Kaieteur News – Western Scientific Company Limited (WSCL) last week donated over $3.5 million worth of care packages and infant disposal diapers to residents of Region Five who are affected by the severe flooding.
The company in a release stated that 34,608 disposal diapers and 600 care packages were donated.
The packages include a number of sanitary products such as soaps, soap powder, garbage bags, hand sanitizers, bleach, sanitary pads, mouthwash, and disinfectants among other items.
Edwin Mackoon, President and Founder of the company said that WSCL’s effort was fuelled by the company’s desire to render assistance in this time of need in the country.
“Upon hearing that the floods affecting the regions across the country were categorised as a level two disaster by His Excellency, Dr. Irfaan Ali, we immediately sought to identify an affected region and provide our support and assistance in a tangible way,” the President said.
The company was alerted to the needs of residents along the Mahaicony, Mahaica and ABARY Rivers and made contact with the Regional Chairman of the Mahaica-Berbice Region, Vickchand Ramphal indicating their intentions.
In a matter of three days, Mackoon highlighted that the company was able to procure and deliver the donated items and hopes that the items will help the families in need to get back on their feet.
Prior to this donation, some 350 hampers were handed over by WSCL’s Manager for Southern Territories, Richard Ramlal to the Regional Chairman at the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital and to Branch road, Mahaicony.
According to Ramlal his company has always taken its social and corporate responsibility seriously.
“Having seen the floods first hand, l know we made the right decision to make our contribution. I know the people who the care packages are intended to benefit from will certainly make good and much needed use of them. I am happy l am a part of a team that gives back to our community,” he lamented.
The Regional Chairman in expressing his gratitude said that the donation from the private company is timely as the state’s resources are stretched to cater to all residents and areas countrywide that are also affected by the flood.
