Kaieteur News – The Commander, of Region Two, (Pomeroon-Supenaam), Superintendent Crystal Robinson, is urging men who are victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse to speak out and file police reports against their abusers, even if they are female.
Robinson was at the time being interviewed on the weekly ‘Police and You’ radio program hosted by Police Public Relations Officer, Stan Gouveia.
She stated that the Police in her division are very responsible and protect the identities of victims. The commander added that, throughout her entire career, only on two occasions had she seen men speak out against their female abusers.
“In my years in the Guyana Police Force,” Robinson said, “I’ve come across about two reports where females had raped men. These matters went to court, but the men never turned up. I also know of a woman abusing her husband. He did go to court and she was fined, because he said, he doesn’t want her to be incarcerated. She was fined, and eventually, they separated,” she said.
Robinson added that, in these situations, she is encouraging all communities to be supportive towards the men who show emotions.
“When you’re coming up as a youngster and you cry, people say, ‘Why you crying? Do you want to be a sissy? You’re a man, Stop crying, Stand up, men don’t cry. But we have to realize that we’re only human, and we have feelings, and there is nothing wrong with men crying, I think men don’t want to look small in society because they realize their peers would look down on them and say, ‘How you allow she to beat you up, boy?’ Because of those persons, men don’t want to come out and talk when their rights are being violated,” the superintendent added.
