Jun 25, 2021 Letters
DEAR EDITOR,
It was difficult not to feel some sadness reading former President Donald Ramotar’s letter (Former President, Donald Ramotar, responds to Freddie Kissoon again – June 23, 2021). It is a letter that screamed attention for someone who once commanded this but is now placed in a corner by his party.
Mr. Ramotar, who was a one-term minority president, is now using the media to satiate the craving for attention. Poor chap. If I may advise him, the more he writes the more he exposes himself. A simple question was asked of him by me. He has not answered it thus I repeat for him. Was his son, who reportedly knocked down Freddie Kissoon’s nephew in a motor vehicle accident, ever been charged, or did Ramotar compensate him?
No amount of “I repeat that the car driven by my son did not hit Mr. Kissoon’s nephew…in fact, he, along with another man, was lifting a transformer out of a GPL truck and he stumbled on the side of the car…” would change what happened on that day, no Mr. Ramotar, no.
In fact, the policewoman (Ms. Webster) who did the investigations and interviewed several eyewitnesses would take offense to Mr. Ramotar’s misguided information of what exactly happened on the day his son (Alexei Ramotar) was accused of hitting Kissoon’s nephew, causing him serious injuries.
Freddie did in a letter to KN (The road accident involving the President’s son and my nephew – Nov. 02, 2014) attested to what happened when his nephew was hit, how it was known who hit him, and that person he reminded Mr. Ramotar is his son. He also said he did not seek or receive any financial compensation for his nephew. Now over to you, please answer the question.
Sorry Mr. Ramotar it is not for laymen Mark Benschop to prove your son was wrong. You know that too. It is for the magistrate to determine, but again Mr. Ramotar was your son charged and the magistrate ruled him wrong or not wrong? Please answer the question.
And as we are at it about poor Alexei, the cyber cable optic job his father’s government gave him was an abject failure. That colossal failure robbed taxpayers billions of dollars which his son was paid millions to do. It was grossly mismanaged and he should thank the APNU+AFC for salvaging what was left of a corrupt and badly executed project by his government. Poor Guyana could have lost much more leaving Alexei to swim in the ocean because he would have sunk and taken Guyana down with him.
The Auditor General’s Report proves there was gross incompetence in the execution of the project. Daddy cannot bury or wash away the facts. (‘Auditor General blocked attempts to expose breaches of financial laws by Ramotar’s son’ – Guyana Standard – June 3, 2019) “The AG in his final report, claimed that millions of dollars spent on the project materials were verified even when the possibility of verification did not exist. In fact, the audit of the project which was conducted by Audit Officer, Marlon Leitch, found that numerous breaches occurred under Ramotar’s son…”
A proud father seeks to hide and encourage his child not to repeat the same mistake and would even chide him for wasting taxpayers’ money. This shame and disgrace is nothing to be proud of. It would have been better for this abysmal failure and incompetence was left in the past.
But bringing Mr. Ramotar back to the issue. This is not the question about Alexei’s qualifications or anything personal against him. It is about an injustice allegedly committed by him against Mr. Kissoon’s nephew who had to suffer for over a year without a fulltime job to take care of his family.
I also take the opportunity to invite Mr. Ramotar, whom I’m sure has much time on his hand, to read Freddie’s Nov 2, 2014 letter, “The road accident involving the President’s son and my nephew.” His mind may be jolted to facts that aren’t hidden and cannot be hidden.
Regards,
Mark Benschop BS, MA, MS
