Kaieteur News – A United States of America (USA) officer who is currently in Guyana for the Tradewinds Exercise 2021, on Sunday had her purse snatched by a man who was yesterday remanded to prison for the offence.
Alvin Archer, 28, a porter of 2093 Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
He denied the charge which alleges that on June 20, 2021, at Croal Street, Georgetown, he stole a brown purse valued at $8,000, one apple iPhone 11 valued at $250,000, and $9,200 cash, all property of Melissa Owens.
The court heard that Owens is a citizen of the United States and is a Military Officer with the United States Coast Guard who is presently in Guyana on a training exercise.
On the day in question, around 10:30hrs, Owens and her colleagues were walking in a westerly direction on Croal Street, Georgetown when Archer emerged from a crowd of men who were playing cards on the pavement and snatched her purse containing the articles mentioned in the charge.
Archer reportedly attempted to make good his escape but Owens gave chase after him. Archer was subsequently apprehended by a police patrol passing on Avenue of the Republic, Georgetown and Owens’ purse was discovered after Archer dropped it on the ground.
Archer was arrested and taken into custody. He was subsequently charged and placed before the court for the offence.
