Kaieteur News – Exxon’s financial statements are vague to the point of being opaque. They are inconsistent with international accounting reporting standards and conceal more than they reveal.
But that should come as no surprise. Anyone who expects differently is not fully alert to the manner in which these multinationals operate when exploiting other countries’ wealth.
But the haziness of Exxon’s financial statements is no different from the elusiveness and slipperiness exhibited by our political leaders. They too are less than transparent when it comes to disclosure.
When our country’s political leaders are evasive, it begs the question whether they are acting in our interests or that of the oil companies. When they refuse to provide clarity on issues of concern, it makes the public question whether they have our best interests at heart.
Exxon’s financial statements are no different from what our leaders are doing within the management of Guyana’s oil wealth. There is no dissimilarity between the manner in which Exxon treats Guyanese and the contempt with which our political leaders are exhibiting towards us.
