Kaieteur News – After weeks of making reports and awaiting a police investigation into a robbery and attempted rape, two female medical students were finally contacted by police yesterday, one day after a report was published in this newspaper.
Kaieteur News had reported that the medical students, ages 23 and 24, were deeply concerned for their safety after a house thief attempted to rape one of them during his second break-in at their Castello Housing Scheme, Georgetown apartment.
The 23-year-old informed this publication yesterday that a detective, who was supposed to follow-up on the first incident, contacted her and inquired about her availability to give a statement. The first incident occurred on June 6, 2021, less than one week after the victims had moved into their two-bedroom apartment located in Castello Housing Scheme.
The victim stated that on the date in which the robbery incident occurred, she was home alone and went to bed at approximately 23:00hrs and left her computer in the living room. The next morning when she woke up, she said that the computer and a television that was in the living room were missing. A report was made at the East La Penitence Police Outpost and hours later, a detective showed up unprepared to conduct a preliminary investigation into the robbery.
Two weeks later, on June 19, 2021, another report was made after there was a second break-in and attempted rape at the same location at around 04:00hrs. The 24-year-old victim stated that on that date, she was home alone when her phone alarm went off. The young woman said that when she woke up to turn off the alarm, she noticed a shadow near her bedroom window. The shadow turned out to be a man who, she said, placed a knife to her neck.
The suspect, the woman informed, then indicated that he wanted to have sexual intercourse with her. In an attempt to outsmart the suspect, the victim said that she agreed but told the man to take a shower and put on a condom first. The suspect, she related, complied and proceeded to the other room. The victim said that it was then that she took the opportunity to escape through a window – injuring her left foot in the process. Reports were made but no investigation was carried out then, the woman had related.
