“Growing up, we have always heard ‘children/youths are the future.’ Time is changing and will continue to change. The role we play is very significant, since we are creating jobs, increasing innovation, raising competition and are responsive to change economic opportunities and trends.”

Kaieteur News – In hopes of getting floral businesses recognised more locally, Shari Singh decided to launch her own business.
It was last Valentine’s Day that she officially launched her business called “Florals by Shari” which provides a wide range of hand-made floral arrangements, floral backdrops and floral decorations to suit just about any event. The 23-year-old mother of one, during an interview with Kaieteur News, said that because she is unable to work a 9 to 5 job, since she has to raise her daughter, she decided to start her own “work from home business.” Growing up, she said that she always had an admiration for flowers and before she started it all, she decided that the ultimate goal would be her daring to be different. Even as she noted that young people, especially women, are more into clothing, food, beauty and makeup businesses, Singh observed that there are just a handful of floral shops in Guyana. Singh, who has no problem sharing her art and skills with those interested in learning something new, said that having past experience in sales and marketing has helped her to aim for growth and development. This, she said, aids in creating new strategies that could bring in more clients. The business has indeed been thriving, mostly due to the support from family and friends, who she said, have all been motivating her to strive for more. But with the onset of the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, she admitted that there were some hurdles, some of which she is still hoping to overcome. For Singh, it has been difficult to attract a growing clientele base and this, she said, poses a challenge for her business. But with unyielding faith, Singh has no intention of losing sight of her vision to grow. Moreover, she has opted to “leave it all in the hands of the Creator, and is therefore confident that her business will eventually reach its full, blooming potential. Speaking of how business is done amid the ongoing pandemic, Singh explained that when delivering to clients or clients have to uplift, she always ensures that all COVID-19 measures are in place. As her business grows, Singh has plans to setup an outdoor spot to display her pieces. “Since I only use artificial flowers at the moment, my long term goal for this business is to expand and be able to have my own shop which would be cooler to store imported fresh flowers,” she related. She also spoke of plans to have locations throughout the country that would create jobs for locals. Already trying to get people involve, Singh yesterday hosted a floral workshop where she provided training to persons of all age groups who are interested in learning new skills. At the end of the training, persons were awarded a certificate along with the floral arrangement, which they created. The young florist is of the firm belief that young entrepreneurs have the potential of helping to boost the economy with the fresh and appealing ideas, which they bring to the public. “Growing up, we have always heard ‘children/youths are the future.’ Time is changing and will continue to change. The role we play is very significant, since we are creating jobs, increasing innovation, raising competition and are responsive to changing economic opportunities and trends.” When asked what more can be done to boost small businesses locally, Singh stressed the need for partnerships among businesses. She said too that they could invest in advertising, especially on social media platforms, which will help to bring in more customers. She is also convinced that it is important to “give back to the community” since “a little goes a long way…” Singh also embraces a principle of reaching out to customers to express her appreciation for their support and to enlighten them about new products and promotions.
