DEAR EDITOR,
Where exactly is this “One Guyana” because I need to move out of this divided Guyana that our Government is shamelessly nurturing.
I listened to the press conference by our Vice President, Mr. Jagdeo, and his response to a second distribution of a COVID cash grant is worrying. Mr. Jagdeo highlighted that poor administration on their part caused setbacks in the issuing of cash grants and for that reason; they are looking to do things differently. He mentioned that they are still sorting pink slips. Based on his response I am not sure if persons with pink slip will even receive a cash grant, since he said the Government is looking to focus on vulnerable groups, like the elderly and single parents.
While I have no issue with a specific group receiving cash grant, I believe everyone, eighteen and over, should be given a cash grant. The problem I have with our Vice President’s statement is that we will be doing a great injustice to many. If the rumours coming from the opposition are true that many of their supporters did not receive cash grants, and some others pink slips, while others did, then how do we justify the action of not granting those, who signed the pink slips cash grant, and suddenly focus on vulnerable groups? This can never be a step in the direction of “One Guyana.”
This leaves more questions than answers, and as a supporter of this Government, I am holding our President accountable. Mr. President, an audit should be done of the first round of the cash grant distribution, so that we can clearly know what the administrative issues were, and seek to address these issues so that all Guyanese can benefit during these hard times.
Regards,
Daniel Basdeo
