The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) has swooped in to ensure that one of their star athletes in 800m National Champion, Devaun ‘Scooby’ Barrington, will be part of the team heading to Ecuador to participate in the 2021 South American Championship this weekend.
In an invited comment with Kaieteur Sport, the multiple time national and Aliann Pompey Invitational (API) winner, shared that he was elated to be able to represent Guyana and be part of one of the biggest contingents that the Golden Arrowhead has ever fielded at the meet which will see all 13 nations of South America competing.
Barrington still have aspirations of making the Olympic Standard to join up with Aliyah Abrams who is the only Guyanese track star to qualify for the Tokyo Games thus far, and the South America Championships may very well be his last chance since the API has since been cancelled, while the AAG’s National Championships is looking very doubtful.
The GDF athlete further expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Army for their massive support in funding his airfare and he vowed to do his best with the given opportunity which includes being a beacon of order and discipline in the Spanish speaking nation.
However, Guyana will miss out on a golden opportunity to field both a 4×100 and a 4×400 team after word reached to the AAG on Monday ahead of the team’s departure today that 2017 South America Games 400m men’s gold medalist, Winston George, sustained an injury and will be unable to compete.
Barrington will link up with fellow GDF team mate, high jumper Mark Jhalu, who was also sponsored by the Army. The other athletes for Team Guyana in Peru include, Emanuel Archibald who is in good form, Arinze Chance, Jasmine Abrams (S.A. women’s 100m top seed), Andrea Foster (S.A. 800m women’s top seed), Quamel Prince, Noelex Holder and Jeremy Bascombe.
The support staff will include Johnny Gravesande as Coach and Kenisha Headley as Team Manager/Assistant Coach.
