DEAR EDITOR,
Is Texila offering a medical or any other degree in drain digging? It is reported in social media that a contractor, son of a minister of the government, was awarded a medical degree from Texila. I congratulate the young man and encourage him to pursue higher studies in a foreign land where he will acquire sound practical training and experience in medicine.
I should note that a number of prominent persons affiliated with this government have secured questionable Executive MBAs; they did not pass the GCE or CXC examinations, or attended university. But they got admission to pursue a Master’s Degree. Others do the studies, write exams, and prepare papers for them. Obviously, the degree recipients learn nothing but occupy high positions in this government. Is this now a norm for this government? My grandparents used to me tell me while growing up to study very hard and I will be rewarded richly. I listened to them and I studied and succeeded. They said don’t cheat and or steal and I listened to their words of wisdom. I live by that standards and I am proud of my achievements. If a man of ‘bhusey’ pursues a degree with others doing the work for him, the product will be ‘bhusey’. He won’t know much.
The medical doctor is tied to a company that has been given contracts under this government to pursue emergency works in infrastructure through the NDIA and Works offices. Does the university also offer skills in public works while one is doing medical studies? Why would a father whose son completed a medical degree have his son engaged in contracted agricultural work? Would anyone with a passion for medical studies be involved in agriculture works? Is this not a mockery of honesty? Did the medical doctor study medicine or drains? The young man is ascribed the moniker “Dr. Drain Digger”. Is this how he wants to be known or his father wants him to be known?
Yours truly,
Dharmendra Lalji
