DEAR EDITOR,
I grow tired of the back and forth with race in the letter sections of all the daily newspaper in Guyana. Of note, is MP Amanza Walton-Desir’s clear and contrived message that Indo-Guyanese are “mentally lazy” and President Ali’s inaccurate pronouncement of all races coming to Guyana to seek betterment.
While the President’s message was to try and convey a message of peace and unity, and togetherness, it is MP Amanza’s statements which has been made to attack and divide. Yet we see writers like Lincoln Lewis pouring daily that the President is the one who is attacking Afro-Guyanese. Why is it that Lewis is not condemning MP Amanza’s statements? Why is he and others so fixated on dividing the good folks of this country? Surely, Lewis is justified in his displeasure in the inaccurate statements made by the President, who subsequently apologised, but was there not a better tone he could have used? Was the way he expressed himself really the best way to convey his displeasure? Surely, a man as experienced as Lewis in trade unionism could have shown better decorum. I am disappointed in him for his actions as of late.
To him, I would like to put forward Hanson’s Razor: never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.
As for MP Amanza Walton-Desir, I would like to say: take a look at what the President did and apologise. Let it be from your sense of maturity and recognising that you made a mistake uttering those words. You might be an MP for the APNU+AFC Coalition but your tax is paid for by all Guyanese.
Regards,
Amir Khan
