Good night- Christian Aguilera is out of this contest due to that anaconda choke applied by Carlston Harris
Kaieteur News – Guyanese-born Carlston Harris beat American Christian Aguilera in vicious fashion via the anaconda choke route less than halfway through the opening round of their three-round fight in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in Las Vegas last night.
Fighting on the undercard of the event that featured a women’s Flyweight bout between Michelle Waterson and Marina Rodriguez, Harris made his debut in the UFC a most memorable one.
Hailing from Skeldon on the Corentyne, Berbice, the six foot, 170 pounds fighter started cautiously as his shorter opponent seemed busier of the two. Both men landing feeling out blows and during one such exchange Harris seemed to connect and forced Aguilera on his bicycle and he sought to go to a clinch.
Known for his grappling ability and wicked submission holds, the Guyanese, who resides in neighbouring Brazil, did not disappoint, working his way into position and flipping the American into the dangerous anaconda choke hold, putting him to sleep in seconds, the watchful referee jumping in quickly to separate the pair and end the contest as Aguilera could not respond.
An ecstatic Harris thanked his Guyanese and many fans and also President Irfaan Ali for giving him permission to use the Guyana flag along with the Brazilian flag on entering the ring. Harris dedicated the fight to the youths.
Harris has been fighting for nine years and was happy to be called for his UFC debut. He has won three straight and seven of his last eight fights which caught UFC matchmakers’ attention MMAMania website indicated. He has five stoppage wins in his last seven victories, which helped his cause.
In the co-main event, Donald Cerrone was to face Alex Morono in Welterweight action.
Seven countries were represented during last night’s action in the United States, Brazil, South Korea, Cameroon, Uzbekistan, Slovakia and Guyana, with Harris proudly flying the Guyana and Brazilian flags.
