DEAR EDITOR,
It was announced on Monday May 03, that the International Press Institute (IPI) had recorded some 635 ‘attacks’ on journalists over ‘the past year’ by what were described as mainly ‘authoritarian governments’ across the world.
The IPI bemoaned the fact that as many as 48 Journalists were killed during the period in question.
The Institute went on to observe that the highest number of ‘attacks’ in any one country was carried out in India, against as many as 84 journalists.
The Report was issued in the overall context of Press Freedom becoming the target of varying degrees of apprehension and indeed contention, even in so called ‘democratic’ countries.
Fortunately, there is hardly such experience obtaining in Guyana and the Caricom Region.
Sincerely
E. B. John
