Kaieteur News – Guyana’s contingent at the Latin American Singles and Mixed Doubles Qualifying tourney for the Tokyo Olympics ended their stint after the mixed doubles team of Shemar Britton and Chelsea Edghill were blanked 4-0 by Team Ecuador in their first round knockout match.
The scores of that round-of-16 matchup read 11-9 11-8 11-7 11-9 to the Ecuadorian pair of Alberto Mino and Nathaly Paredes.
A correspondence from the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) detailed the comments from Team Coach Idi Lewis as the team prepares to leave Rosario, Argentina today. The Coach was quoted saying, “I’m extremely proud of my team’s performance. They did extremely well under the circumstances. With the exception of Chelsea who plays professionally in Portugal, the other members haven’t seen international competition in two years due to the covid-19 pandemic and other reasons but we were still able to be competitive against seasoned professionals with access to all necessary resources from their private and public sector.”
“What is consistently clear from engagements like these is we are right up there, skill wise, and imagine what’s possible with the level of support and exposure the other nations have available.”
“I must give special thanks to the general public for their support, news reporters for the coverage, the Guyana Olympic Association, GTTA and last but definitely not least the President Godfrey Munroe who went beyond and above to have Guyana represented at these trials.”
“Thank you for all the support and love shown during this tournament.”
