Kaieteur News –President Irfaan Ali has announced that medical and nursing students will be lending support to the COVID-19 immunisation programme, during his virtual vaccination update on Wednesday. President Ali also disclosed that in the coming days, the Guyana Defence Force will provide support by lending 400 officers to expedite the registration of citizens receiving their vaccines.
The students who volunteer will also receive a jab of the vaccine, which serves to limit their exposure to the virus, according to Ali. The President also noted that the government is embarking on an integrative approach to immunisation, one that includes Cabinet oversight, local government bodies; civil society, the medical and nursing students, and the medical brigade of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF). Currently, those eligible for vaccination are frontline health care workers, elderly persons 60 years and over and now persons 40 years and older. The immunisation programme has also extended vaccination to government and opposition members of parliament.
He outlined the government’s plan to have 10,000 citizens vaccinated daily as a means of accelerating the vaccination programme.
While the programme continues to roll out, President Ali made it clear that “we are not ahead of the curve” as we are still managing the deadly pandemic, so all stakeholders and all Guyanese need to be on board. “Guyanese, the pandemic remains a serious national issue, a major global health concern. I urge you to continue to follow the guidelines, I urge you to continue to follow the guidelines, I urge you to continue and stay safe. I urge you to continue to protect your families and your communities by adhering to the COVID guidelines,” he pleaded.
President Ali said that while the government has sought to strike a balance with the economy and the health management of the COVID-19 pandemic, businesses must understand that they must adhere to the mandated 40 percent occupancy and ensure that their customers follow the protocols as they use their establishments.
He concluded by saying, “The government is sparing no effort in ensuring that we get vaccinated as quickly as possible but we too, all of us have a responsibility to help in this process. I urge you to take seriously, the guidelines of the COVID-19 Task Force as together we rally to ensure we get out of this pandemic as quickly as possible, continue to stay safe and may God bless all of you.”
