Kaieteur News- Police ensured the shackles were never released on GNIC in the lone Division One encounter over the weekend in the GCA’s two-day GISE, Star Party Rentals & Trophy Stall cricket tournament at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary.
Led by contrasting centuries from the 20-year-old pair of Kevlon Anderson and Quinten Sampson and five-wicket haul from 28-year-old off-spinner Kelvin Leitch
, Police marched to emphatic innings and 96-run victory over GNIC yesterday.
Scores: GNIC 110 & 94, Police 304.
In sweltering heat, on a slow track which kept low and a heavy outfield, Police resumed the second and final day on 242-6 with Sampson on 106 and Anderson on 97 after they had joined forces on Saturday with their team wobbling on the ropes at 68-6.
However, Sampson, who clobbered nine sixes and five fours in an explosive 106 from just 58 balls, was run out off the day’s third ball to the 177-run seventh wicket stand.
Leitch joined the eleg
ant Anderson who reached his century an exquisitely timed cover driven boundary off Jermaine Benjamin.
But with the score on 260 and the host in hunt of quick runs, Anderson missed an on-drive and was LBW as Benjamin struck while Leitch (17) flicked for six before Benjamin removed him at 173-9.
Last man Ronsford Beaton and Keston Hardcourt (5 n.o), added 31 for the last wicket with the West Indies ODI pacer, hitting three sixes and a four in cameo 22 to take Police past the 300 mark before Beaton was removed.
Dwain Dick finished with 4-75 and was supported by Benjamin who had 2-36.
GNIC, needing 191 to make Police bat again, slumped to 50-5 and never recovered.
GNIC began their second innings in horrendous fashion; losing Premchand Sookdeo who was caught at point for a duck without a run on the board.
Police were soon 3-2 when Mark Nicholson fell to National left-arm spinner Anthony Adams and when Beaton, who had 4-21 in the first innings, got rid of Dwain Dick (2) who added 28 with his father David Dick, the Lawmen were 31-3.
Two wickets tumbled with the score on 50 when the elder Dick was run out for 27 and Roshidi Benjamin was LBW to Leith for a duck.
After Lunch, Dexter Solomon (2) was bowled and Quincy Ovid-Richardson (5) edged a catch to the Keeper Kemol Savory as Leitch struck in quick succession to leave GNIC on 67-7.
Jermaine Benjamin deposited Leitch for six before he was LBW for 13 at 75-8 while Jermaine Grovener (7) was bowled by Adams at 82-9.
The last pair took the score to 94 before a quicker ball from Leitch, which kept low, bowled Jeffery Blair for 12 to end the contest with over a session to spare. (Sean Devers)
