Kaieteur News – The Guyana Squash Association (GSA) has been one of the local sports bodies that have been hit harder since the COVID-19 pandemic reached Guyana one year ago but head of the GSA; David Fernandes, during an invited comment with Kaieteur Sport has revealed that his association is remaining patient.
The GSA has not been able to have any activities since last year and their request to train was denied by the National Covid-19 task force mainly because it’s an indoor sport.
The inability to train and prepare for tournaments will very likely not allow for the association to send a boys’ team to the Junior Pan Am games this year that is scheduled to be contested from June 5-19 in Cali, Colombia.
Fernandes noted that the GSA boys’ team would’ve consisted of Caribbean Junior Champion Shomari Wiltshire, Nicholas Verwey, Samuel Ince-Caravahal and Michael Alphonso and since preparation usually take in the region of three-four months, it will be highly impossible for the lads to make the tournament.
However, the administrator is remaining optimistic that activities would be able to resume when school reopens, citing the Ministry of Education’s proposed plan to resume face to face classes following, “The Easter holiday after government intensifies its COVID-19 vaccination programme during March.”
Meanwhile, Fernandes is very optimistic that Guyana will be able to attend the Junior Caribbean Championships in Barbados this August instead of July where Wiltshire will have the opportunity to defend his title.
Although, Barbados is currently in lockdown, they have received a large shipment of vaccines which is anticipated to be rolled out soon.
In addition, the Caribbean Senior Championship is slated for Jamaica this November.
Fernandes concluded that while the entire squash fraternity may be itching to get back in action, there are still more important things right now, like ensuring that the fight against the COVID-19 virus that has taken many lives will be won, so the GSA will be patient and await approval to restart activities from the task force.
