Kaieteur News – General Manager of Assuria General Insurance Yogindra Arjune said that the overwhelming response (over 90 players) to their Inaugural 3-Hole Golf Tournament coupled with the loss of a day’s play on Friday due to rain has led to the extension of the event to March 20th.
“We certainly did not expect the numbers and interest in the event to be so high and with more than 70 additional persons registered but unable to participate owing to the weather, we felt it was only fair to extend by one more day,” said Arjune.
The innovative 3-hole Golf tournament has seen players of all categories and levels of skill turn out for their chance to be named as the First ever Champion in one of 4 categories (Men’s, Women’s, Under 21 and Under 12) played under the new format. Assuria General Insurance has been the most visible promoter of Golf in Guyana in recent years and has taken a strong stance on the expansion of the game in Guyana’s school system. “We see golf as an opportunity for our country, especially our children to develop strong social and networking skills, stay healthy and compete on a world stage while adding to their education and mental development,” said Arjune.
At the sponsor’s request, the tournament will allow for the posting of a new card by previous players (time permitting) that will replace their posted score. There are 4 categories open to the general public and players of all skill levels and experience are welcome to participate in the event.
The final day of competition (there is No Entry Fee) will commence at 15:00hrs on March 20th with the presentation of trophies and gifts to be done at the conclusion of the event.
The tournament was run off under the firm hand of Captain/competitor Chen Deo and saw many of Guyana’s top players led by Richard Haniff displaying their skills, with competitive scores posted by Ryan Ramjit, Leaknaraine Shivraj, William Walker, Carlos Adams, Romel Bhagwadin, Roy Cummings, Robin Tiwari, Joaan Deo and several other seasoned players who were challenged by dozens of newcomers to the sport with excellent performance.
