Kaieteur News – The Executive and members of the Dorado Speed Swim Club (DSSC), one of the leading clubs in Guyana is paying tribute to its late President, Maurice Watson who passed away a few weeks ago.
Watson would have been associated with the club for over two decades, both of his daughters being members. The club has described him as a true worker for the sport who dedicated his time and energies towards making swimmers happy and the sport better.
No job was too big or too small for Watson, the club noted; he worked tirelessly at fund-raising events helping with all the manual labour associated with same whilst also securing sponsorship.
“Maurice was elected as president in May 2016 and remained in that position until his death on February 10, 2021. He had many plans and aspirations for the club. He fervently believed that Dorado Speed Swim Club is the best swimming club in Guyana and must maintain that position. He continuously encouraged the rest of the executive and members to do more and better.”
DSSC also stated that Watson had dreams of one day when swimmers, rather than leaving the sport when they completed school, would be able to continue swimming well into their 20s and 30s with the assistance of sponsors and scholarships.
“He wanted the club to host annual international competitions focusing on distance events and hoped to see more participation in open water swimming. He believed in the possibility of fairness and transparency in the swimming fraternity to the benefit of all swimmers. At the time of his death, he was leading Dorado to work along with another club to assist the Association to get swimmers back into the National Aquatic Centre and Colgrain Pool.
The Executive and members of Dorado Speed Swim Club were saddened by his death, but will try to continue his legacy. Our hearts are with his wife Marcel and daughters, Monique and Dominique. May his soul rest in peace.”
Meanwhile, Mrs. Watson, on behalf of her family has expressed their thanks to all who comforted them during their time of grief, be it through their prayers, expressions of sympathy and general support.
“Your kind words and deeds are very much appreciated. I would like to express special gratitude to the Dorado Speed Swim Club and the extended swimming family, the Saint Stanislaus Old Students Society, Pastor Elswart Williams and the members of the Heavenly Light Full Gospel Church and Jerrick’s Funeral Home. You have all combined to strengthen us when we needed it most.”
