Kaieteur News – A pedal cyclist is now critical after he was struck down on Friday along Vlissengen Road, Georgetown by a minibus attached to the Ministry of health.
According to police, the cyclist is yet to be identified.
The unidentified victim was struck down by the bus sometime around 06:10Hrs in the vicinity of the Guyana Water Incorporation’s (GWI) office.
Police reports detailed that he was riding with a mattress on his head and had attempted crossing over to the western side of the road but ended up instead in the path of the minibus.
Police noted too, that the bus was speeding as well. Its driver a 50-year-old resident of Pike Street Kitty told investigators that he tried swerving to the right but could not avoid hitting down the cyclist.
The bus, police reported, after hitting the cyclist down crashed further into CCTV camera’s pole situated on the western side of the road.
As the driver exited the bus, the cyclist lay motionless on the roadway with notable injuries about his body. An ambulance was summoned and transported the unconscious man to the emergency ward at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
There he was admitted immediately after doctors noted that he was critical. Doctors told police that the pedal cyclist suffered five broken ribs and a contusion to his lungs.
Police were later updated, that he remains unconscious and critical. In fact, according to the police he is currently being supported by a ventilator machine. Noting the seriousness of his condition, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) is now seeking the public’s help in identifying him.
As investigations continue into the accident, cops have detained the minibus, its driver and the man’s bicycle at the Kitty Police Station.
