Dear Editor,
Kaieteur News – Barbados received 100,000 doses of Covishield/AstraZeneca vaccines as a donation from India. Prime Minister Mottley wrote personally to the Indian Prime Minister. She did not ask her cabinet to do that. She took up the mantle. Barbados will be the first CARICOM country to begin vaccination. Not long after that news, the Indian High Commissioner to Guyana gave an indication that Guyana will receive a donation from the 500,000 doses promised to CARICOM. The entire CARICOM block will receive 500,000 doses, while the PM of Barbados got 100,000 doses separately and will still receive from the 500,000 CARICOM does because Barbados is a member. I sometimes wonder if our politicians truly have the people’s interest at heart. Every day on the news you see developing countries lobbying the vaccine makers Pfizer, Moderna, Johnson and Johnson, AstraZeneca and others for vaccines and are able to make deals some already receiving small batches. For Guyana, all you hear is the government is working hard to get vaccines. The government needs to ramp up their efforts to have treatment available to Guyanese. The government should also encourage the private hospitals and drug companies in Guyana to seek vaccines and treatment since these organisations procure medicines from some of these vaccine makers. The health minister should give in his daily briefings, the stage of vaccine procurement for our people.
Yours truly,
