DEAR EDITOR,
I am a bit relieved that the Covax facility has indicated an initial amount of 104,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine. This will start the drive in Guyana with frontline workers and the elderly. The vaccine from China, I am a bit sceptical but research done in countries around the world suggests it’s safe and effective though not as high compared to western made vaccines. In the news today, I saw Barbados being promised by India 100,000 doses of the Covishield. Prime Minister Mia Mottley wasted no time and wrote to the Indian government and that letter bore fruit today. We could have also gotten a direct allotment from India outside of the grant promised to CARICOM by India but our leaders did not act swift as Barbados did. In this pandemic every nation is doing its utmost to bring security to its population. Vaccinations alone will not end this pandemic at least for this year. The government must be more rigorous in its attempt to obtain vaccine for at least 70% of our population. We must use every means at our disposal to obtain these live saving treatments. In addition to these vaccines, the government must take steps to ensure people wear their mask and adhere to social distancing. The rules could be there but if they are not being enforced then it’s just a waste of time.
