Kaieteur News – While many have been constrained by the COVID-19 pandemic and its ravaging effects on the world, 14-year-old Evanjalie Deidre Nelson, has kick-started her own business venture as a nail technician. She has already attracted the attention of the Guyanese public and in remarkable fashion too. She is one of the many young entrepreneurs who have launched businesses amid the ongoing global pandemic. In fact, the pandemic was the driving force behind our featured entrepreneur’s recent successes. Nelson who recently turned 14, is the owner of her own nail technician business, “The Nail Room by Evanjalie,” and is using her creative skills to her advantage.
In an exclusive interview with Kaieteur News, Nelson revealed that with the arrival of the COVID-19 virus in Guyana last March and the need for quarantine, which ultimately led to the closure of schools, provided her with the time needed to kick-start the venture. She spoke of having a lot of time on her hands while being away from school and it was an opportunity she could not waste. As she reflected on her journey leading to the start-up of the business, she spoke of being drawn into the nail tech industry because she finds it to be an interesting field where she could explore the depths of her creativity. Adding to that, she noted that she has always been fascinated with nail art so it was only natural for her to pursue something that naturally sparked her interest. Among her main inspirations to become a nail technician and young business owner was her mother, Jennifer Ciprani, and her longing for financial independence at a young age. What is even more impressive is that she started practicing nail art in July of last year and by December she was already taking clients. In less than six months, the young nail tech appears to have mastered her craft, while still exploring ways to boost her creativity and services offered.
Further, Nelson, who attends the Diamond Secondary School on the East Bank of Demerara, said that it can sometimes be difficult managing a business, while still having to attend her classes virtually at home. However, to remedy that situation she decided to only take bookings when there are no classes and on weekends. Since it was during the pandemic that she launched and registered success, Nelson is not worried about the fluctuation of sales, since many persons will access her services when there is a need and since many of the people she attends to, are concerned about safeguarding themselves from the virus. And on that note, she sought to highlight that she maintains strict precautionary measures to protect both herself and clients from the virus. Nelson believes that young creatives, much like her, deserve more exposure locally. In fact, she said, “We have a contribution to make to our society and the exposure helps us a lot with that.” She also believes that the government should allow young people who are operating a small business to set up and operate at least five years before they are required to pay burdensome taxes. Also, she is convinced that it will be appreciated if government decides to include in its agenda, the establishment of measures that can help small businesses to thrive. That includes starting funds for the small businesses to have a proper start-up, along with training courses to equip them with the necessary skills before the money is disbursed to them. As young as Nelson is, she is already aspiring to have her own nail studio. She is hoping that she can be an inspiration to other young entrepreneurs or any young person hoping to venture into entrepreneurship.
