DEAR EDITOR,
The potential projects proposed for budget 2021 as mentioned by the Attorney General are great forward looking projects that will enhance the development of the country. However, we must not lose sight of what must be considered to be the single most important undertaking over the next several years. This is the improved coastal management along our coastal plains via the following:
1. Restrengthening of our sea defences,
2. The enhancement of our coastal pumping stations and
3. The improvement and maintenance of our drainage and irrigation infrastructure.
Without this must have top priority project along the coastal plain another major flood will affect the economic growth trajectory of the country. We have already started to see the impact of broken sea defences and koker system failures along the coast line. The cost of implementation of an effective coastal management plan must not be underestimated. The resulting restrictions on available funds for other key infrastructural projects may be significant enough to push those additional projects further out into the future.
Best regards,
Mr. Jamil Changlee
