DEAR EDITOR,
I can appreciate the recent comments in the news concerning the lack of confidence in making a gas pipeline profitable when compared to renewables. Those involved in the panel discussion should be thanked.
Given the presence of a new administration we should not expect a continued lack of thorough evaluation for the projects being considered in the upcoming budget.
Having the Ministry of Finance review multiple bidders to re-evaluate the feasibility of the gas pipeline never hurts when creating their financial models. The maintenance of gas pipelines has been an issue in other countries and the total lifecycle costs will need to be included in the financial modelling with the multiple pricing and economic scenarios considered. A comparison to alternative energy options including renewables (such as wave, solar and wind) will also ensure a thorough evaluation of the energy mix within our Nation’s portfolio. We must continue to raise the bar on our project selection process especially when considering the current global economic environment. Every dollar spent counts and having a clear view as to the expected return on investment continues to be of utmost importance.
Best regards,
Mr. Jamil Changlee
