Holidays’ accidents…
Kaieteur News – Just as the country was about to close the curtains on 2020, it was met with news of several road accidents.
On Thursday, a 28-year-old labourer was involved in a hit-and-run accident on Zeelugt Public Road, East Bank Essequibo.
The injured man has been identified as Rockey Alleyne of Parika Outfall.
Based on the information received, the accident occurred at around 22:30 hrs.
According to the police report, the labourer was standing on the southern side of the road, when a silver grey car, which was travelling west along the southern side of the road allegedly swerved into the corner and collided with him. The motorcar reportedly sped away.
The man was picked up in a conscious condition and taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where he was treated and sent away. Reports are that checks were made in the area for the motorcar, but none was seen fitting the description. Investigation into the matter still continues.
Meanwhile, Danata Damon, age 26, nurse and a mother of one, lost her life following a motorcar and lorry accident on Coverden Public Road, East Bank Demerara.
Reports are that the accident occurred at around 17:00 hrs. on Thursday.
According to the information received, a motor lorry driven by a 26-year-old male of Block ‘X’ Diamond Housing Scheme was travelling north along the western side of the road allegedly at a fast rate. The driver reported that as he was in the process of swerving from a pothole when he lost control and ended up into the path of a motorcar driven by a 33-year-old male of Enmore, East Coast Demerara, which was travelling south along the eastern side of the road.
The two vehicles ended up in a head on collision causing both to receive extensive damages.
Both the drivers, along with two other occupants of the motor lorry and one from the motorcar were taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC). They were all admitted to the Intensive Care Unit in serious but stable conditions. Damon, who was in the motorcar, succumbed to her injuries the following day. Investigation into the matter still continues.
On New Year’s day, a police woman was hospitalized after her motorcycle collided with a car on the Cove and John Public Road, East Coast Demerara.
The injured woman has been identified as Aquaba Assanah, 44, a Special Constable of Haslington Housing Scheme.
According to the police report the accident occurred at 12:20 hrs.
Reports are that motor car driven by Bryon Mahendra, 39, a fisherman, of Hope Lowland Section ‘D’ was moving east along the northern side of the road. The driver alleged that while proceeding in that direction, he put on his right side indicator and stopped, when an unknown motor car stopped and signalled to him to turn into the access road. He further told police that in the process to turning, the motorcycle, CK 5568, driven by the Police woman who was proceeding from east to west overtook several vehicles along the left side of the road and ended up colliding with the left side of his car.
As a result of the collision the woman fell onto the roadway and was picked up and taken to the GPHC where she was seen and examined by a doctor, who admitted her as a patient. Investigations are ongoing.
Meanwhile, a motorcyclist is currently in the Accident and Emergency Unit Ward at the GPHC, after he fell off his motorcycle and was run over by a car.
Hospitalized is Daniel Austin of Durban Street, Lodge.
Based on information received, the accident occurred at 03:30 hrs. on Turkeyen Railway Embankment, in the vicinity of the CARICOM Secretariat.
Reports are that the motorcyclist was travelling in the pouring rain, west along the southern side of the railway embankment, when he rode into the concrete structure on the road.
As a result, he ended up falling onto the southern lane of the road. Eyewitnesses reportedly told police that after the man fell, he remained lying on the road for a few seconds then was struck by a motorcar driven by 31-year-old male of Better Hope, North Squatting Area, which was travelling west along the road.
He was reportedly dragged some 50 feet by the car. The man was picked up in a semi-conscious state and taken to the GPHC.
He was admitted as a patient in the A&E unit ward in the Critical Bay, suffering from a fractured right wrist, multiple lacerations to the face and right side body and head trauma.
Austin’s condition was listed as stable. Reports are that a breathalyzer test was conducted on the driver but no trace of alcohol was found. The 31-year-old is in custody assisting with the investigation.
