Kaieteur News – It was in late February that the Methodist Church Guyana District celebrated the birthday of Sybil Harte. She became the country’s newest centenarian.
She died on Wednesday, the church announced yesterday, in expressing condolences.
The Methodist Church said that it “wishes to announce with a heavy heart the passing of our dear sister, Sybil Harte, who departed this life on December 30, 2020 having lived a full life of 100 years. We express our sincere condolences to members of her family, the Trinity Methodist congregation and the Georgetown circuit. May the God of comfort be felt at this time in your bereavement. The funeral arrangements for late Sis. Sybil Harte will be announced later.”
In February, the centenarian celebrated her 100th birthday. She was a member of the Trinity Methodist Church since June 1932.
Harte was born February 19, 1920 and had outlived both her two children.
She held the post of Cradle Roll Secretary, Sunday School Teacher, Class Leader, and was an influential part of the Women’s League.
She was described as a very approachable and knowledgeable person especially when it comes to the affairs of the church. Members of the congregation had described Harte as a very patient individual who gets persons to commit to their responsibilities within the church.
She still was playing a role in guiding youths in and out of the Methodist church in their religious duties.
This was even though she would have suffered two strokes in the year 2012 that resulted in her not being able to walk and communicate effectively.
Harte would have still continued to contribute to the life of the church through her many writings and letters of encouragement, which she sends to the congregation from time to time.
During her effective years, she also served as a Chairperson of the Guyana Red Cross Society Senior Women’s Group and was involved in organising fundraising among the other seniors.
Ms. Harte was residing in Roxanne Burnham Gardens with her great niece and nephew, the Kaieteur News article had said of her last year.
