Kaieteur News – The Government has signed a $275M contract to rehabilitate the road parallel to the University of Guyana, better known as UG road.
The Ministry of Public Works disclosed that the 900-metre road which links to Sophia has been in a deplorable state over the years even in light of several repairs that were conducted. It was mentioned that the asphalt in the road continues to slip towards the drains on both sides which caused the road to be in such a state.
Currently, the road has several bad spots. Photographs seen by this publication show breakages in the road and large potholes, filled with water due to the rainy season.
The state of the road has been frustrating drivers who use it as a faster way to and from the city.
The new road being built will be equipped with geotextiles, which will hold the foundation firmly and prevent the road from returning to a deplorable state.
The utility poles on the shoulders of the road will also be moved so that the road can be widened to 6.9 metres.
The area was visited by Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill; the Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Nigel Dharamlall, and the Minister within the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development, Anand Persaud, last week.
The Ministry said that Minister Edghill also conducted a visit in the neighbouring community, Cummings Lodge where he announced that Fourth and Fifth Streets will be repaired soon. Streets in Fifth Field, Cummings Lodge would be looked at under the 2021 programme, according to Edghill.
The Ministry of Public Works did not disclose which company the $275M contract was awarded to, but it was revealed that another contract worth $39M was awarded to XL Engineering for the rehabilitation of Owen and McDougal Streets in Kitty, Georgetown.
Edghill also visited the Kitty area last week and the Ministry stated that the residents used the opportunity to talk about the condition of the two streets. Edghill assured them that the 466-metre streets will be repaved.
It was also said that the contractor has three months to complete the work.
Edghill said that his Ministry plans on doing 100 miscellaneous roads; several main access roads, urban roads as well as hinterland roads.
