Kaieteur News – Guyana Jaguars and West Indies T20 All-Rounder Christopher Barnwell said he is disappointed not to be picked in the depleted Windies ODI team, adding that he is still interested in making his ODI debut for the West Indies.
Test Skipper, Jason Holder and White Ball Captain Kieron Pollard are among 12 senior West Indies cricketers to have opted out of the Bangladesh tour due to COVID-19 related concerns or personal issues. The others are Darren Bravo, Shamarh Brooks, Roston Chase, Sheldon Cottrell, Evin Lewis, Shai Hope, Shimron Hetmyer and Nicholas Pooran, Fabian Allen and Shane Dowrich.
The Roger Harper led West Indies Selection panel was forced to pick what could be considered ‘B’ teams for the tour of the sub-continent,where the Directorate General of Health Services in Bangladesh reported that 684 new cases and 23 deaths occurred yesterday, making the tally at 515,184 and death toll at 7,599.
The tour includes three ODIs and two Tests in Chattogram and Dhaka and commences with the first ODI on January 20 and Barnwell, who will celebrate his 34th birthday on January 6, said he was disappointed at not being selected to go to Bangladesh for the ODI series.
“My last super50 was good but could have been better, but I still give thanks to God for my performance. I ended among the top 10 batsmen with the most runs,” said Barnwell, who scored 351 runs from eight games with an average of 43.
In the only Regional tournament played for the year, Barnwell scored 437 runs from eight First-Class matches with one century and two fifties and in List ‘A’ cricket the all-rounder has 1467 runs from 59 matches with an unbeaten 99 being his highest score. The DCC player also has 30 wickets with a best of 4-31 at an Average of 36.23, while he has taken three 4-wicket hauls.
Looking at the team picked, Barnwell, who has played six T20 Internationals for the West Indies between 2011 and 2013, would have fancied his chances of a maiden ODI tour.
“I never told anyone that I was unavailable since none of the selectors contacted me. Yes, I am still interested in playing for the West Indies that’s why I am still playing regional cricket,” disclosed the DCC All-Rounder.
But he is not daunted by his non-selection and aims to impress in this year’s Regional Super50 which is slated for next month in Antigua.
“The preparation for the Regional Super50 starts tomorrow at LBI with a fitness test before three practice matches are played (Jan 8, 10 & 12).
But I am feeling pretty good after getting a few matches in Florida in US Open T20 tournament which was played atthe Central Broward Regional Park Stadium from December 15 and 20,” Barnwell informed.
Meanwhile, Guyanese left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul was eventually selected for this month’s Test tour after being ignored for Test Cricket since 2015 despite not claiming less than 40 wickets in a season for the last five years.
He finished the 2020 season with 50 wickets; the third time he has taken 50 scalps in a single season including his Regional record of 67 scalps in 2015 and has 535 wickets from 120 First-Class matches including 18 from six Tests.
Permaul joined off-spinner Shane Shillingford and left-arm spinner Nakita Miller as the only bowlers with 500 regional first class wickets and bagged three five-wickets and two 10-wicket hauls in the truncated 2020 season.
He was not selected for either the England or New Zealand Test tours this year although he captured 7-59 and 8-18 this season to register the second best match figures in West Indies Regional Cricket since 1966.
Permaul’s non-selection came during his most productive period of his career, while Clive Lloyd, Courtney Browne and Harper were the Head of the Regional Panel. Romario Shepherd (ODI) and Permaul (Test) are the only Guyanese selected for the tour to Bangladesh.
Test squad: Kraigg Brathwaite (capt), Jermaine Blackwood, Nkrumah Bonner, John Campbell, Rahkeem Cornwall, Joshua Da Silva, Shannon Gabriel, Kavem Hodge, Alzarri Joseph, Kyle Mayers, Shayne Moseley, Veerasammy Permaul, Kemar Roach, Raymon Reifer, Jomel Warrican
