Says players must show responsibility during pandemic period
By Sean Devers
Kaieteur News – The ICC sanctioned one-week 2020 US Open T20 Cup is scheduled to commence today at the Broward County Stadium in Florida.
The 33-year-old former West Indies T20 All-rounder Christopher Barnwell, who left Guyana yesterday for North America, will make his debut for 22 Yards Sultans.
Apart from Barnwell, who was born in the Mining Town of Linden, 22 yards Sultans also include Guyanese players; Trevon Griffith, Kevin Sinclair, Ashmead Nedd, Sherfane Rutherford, Anthony Bramble and Devendra Bishoo.
22 yards Sultans will face Atlanta Param Veers at 13:30 hrs in one of three first round games.
Barnwell is an experienced T20 player and has scored 1,160 runs with highest score of 88 and taken 25 wickets in 94 T20 matches.
The batting all-rounder played six T20 Internationals for West Indies after making his debut against Pakistan in 2011; scoring 78 runs and taking one wicket.
He made his IPL debut for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2013. He has also represented Guyana Amazon Warriors, Barbados Tridents and St Lucia Zouks.
Barnwell informed that his DCC teammate Trevon Griffith initiated his selection on the 22 Yards Sultan side since the left-handed Griffith was playing with that side in the 15-match tournament in which the top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals.
The Final of the tournament in which rejected West Indies T20 left-hander Chris Gayle and fellow Jamaican Andre Russell, who made himself unavailable for the West Indies tour to New Zealand, is set for December 20.
Barnwell told Kaieteur Sports that he aims to give a good account of himself since it has been a long time since he played any cricket.
“As you know no one is safe but the Sporting authorities are trying their best to put things in place to have sports up and running so we as players just have to be responsible and follow the Covid-19 guidelines,” the big hitting right-hander responded when asked if he thought it was safe to travel to the USA at this time during the COVID-19 Pandemic?
Somerset Cavaliers Cricket Club are the defending champions.
