Dear Editor,
It is somewhat dismaying to read the various articles on the numerous instances of funds not accounted for. I once defined such situations as “misappropriation” of funds. It’s anything but that. Embezzlement is a better word. To revisit a few: Articles ranging from discovered financial irregularities at various Neighbourhood Democratic Councils, to dubious land deals; to mismanaged funds at Guyana National Printers Limited, all have one factor in common. That is the absolute lack of oversight. So many individuals seem to have free rein to “manage” anyhow; knowing fully well no one is looking over their shoulders. It is the same reason why the government isn’t pleased with the contractors’ costly project at CJIA.
As the country encourages more investors to come and work and live among us, and Guyana is more exposed internationally, one really hopes that more emphasis is placed on the necessary checks and balances being in place, and the necessity of oversight as part of our norms. Since oil has been discovered in Guyana, more and more articles are appearing in international online media, that is non-oil related. Financial bandits should not be given a free pass. Normalizing the absence of oversight shouldn’t be an acceptable way of doing things. The word “o-v-e-r-s-i-g-h-t” should be added to the vocabulary for 2021.
Yours truly,
Chi Kansi
