Kaieteur News – Just over a week ago the Guyana Committee of Services (GCOS) launched a project aimed at acquiring gear for track and field athletes based mainly in New Amsterdam, Bartica and Linden. The launching took place in Berbice.
This project is being spearheaded by Vice-Chairman Lyndon ‘Jumbie’ Jones with assistance from several regular sponsors including Star Party Rentals, Payless Variety Stores,Reggie Baichan of Reggie’s Wholesale Store and Mark Kazim (Chinee man).
The Sticker is a lovely 3” x 6” decorative insignia that can be placed on a vehicle, a briefcase, door or any public place as a sign of one’s pride in one’s country. The not-for-profit Committee wants every Guyanese to purchase a Sticker for the paltry sum of Two Hundred and Fifty Dollars; the funds raised would be used to purchase track shoes and other necessities to promote athletics in Guyana.
It’s another effort by the Guyana Committee of Services to complement the work of state-run and non-governmental units to provide hope and relief to Guyanese involved in Sports and Culture. The Committee continues to strive to find solutions to ‘red flag’ situations faced by ordinary folks by providing timely material assistance. In the case of local athletes, who appear to be the least noticed among the local sports fraternity, the Committee wants to alleviate the financial impact of their proper preparation for competition.
The Guyana Committee of Services has had friendly relations with athletes and their clubs for several years. During 2016, the Committee provided a small financial reward to athletes and coaches who were successful at the Carifta Games, while the mothers of four athletes were each acknowledged with a gift on Mother’s Day. The Committee also made a donation to the Linden Track Club.
In 2017, the Committee provided ‘out-of-pocket’ allowances to all athletes who participated in the Carifta Games and this was repeated in 2018.The Committee in 2018 provided ‘out-of-pocket’ allowances for athletes who participated in the Commonwealth Games in Australia and sponsorship for the Aliann Pompey 3Rd International Meet at Leonora.
Stickers can be obtained from Members of the Guyana Committee of Services, Payless Variety Stores and other designated vendors. The Committee is extending an invitation to businesses and interested individuals to join the organization and embrace a worthy cause. Persons desirous of purchasing stickers in bulk should contact the Committee on telephone numbers 622-2485 or 672-8857.
