Kaieteur News – The fourth edition of the highly anticipated Georgetown Softball Cricket League (GSCL) Inc. Prime Minister’s T20 Cup will take place from November 27-29 in Georgetown.
This was confirmed during the launching of the tournament on Sunday last at the Everest Cricket Club.
The competition will be held in collaboration with the Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports. This event will be contested in three categories; the Masters Over-50, Masters Over-45, and the All-Stars (open) and will culminate at the Everest Cricket Club with over one million dollars in cash and prizes up for grabs.
Speaking at the launching ceremony, President of the GSCL Inc. Ian John welcomed those present and said teams from Florida and Canada will battle with their Guyanese counterparts in what is expected to be a keenly contested competition. “No competition was played since March due to covid. Nevertheless we have lucrative prizes for the teams, and it is imperative that the participating teams honour the time since we are hoping to have the finals in daylight. All these things wouldn’t be possible without the sponsors and I would like to thank them.”
Prime Minister, Brigadier (ret’d) Mark Phillip’s said he is happy to be part of the event which has brought many people together and provided them with opportunities to showcase their talent. “Softball cricket is my game and I am enthusiast. I am happy to be here, this event has brought together thousands and provided many opportunities. This year will be no different, but with an added plus of bringing much social relief to everyone as we face this pandemic,” he said
“Sport and other activities help us with relief, cricket is deeply rooted in Guyana’s history as you know we have produced some of the best cricketers. We have started with softball and it is safe to say cricket is Guyana’s sport, as we can see the price that we hold with our own Guyana Jaguars and Guyana Amazon Warriors. Tournaments like these build relationships that last for a lifetime, camaraderie and unity are all traits this game supports. Our government is proud to be part of this tournament and this is a partnership we are happy to see grow. I would like to issue an order that for 2021 we will have a women’s league as part of the Prime Minister’s Cup.”
The Prime Minister said that it is imperative that organisers ensure that covid-19 protocols are strictly adhere to, as the Government strikes a balance between normalcy and fighting a pandemic. “We moved from total lockdown, partial lockdown, to the point where we are focusing on people adhering to the measures, but also being allowed to be involved in their economic, recreational and other social activities. Best of luck all!”
Former Minister of Public Security Khemraj Ramjattan said it is important to let these activities continue so as to get young people meaningfully occupied. “I am happy that this tournament goes on and I would like to congratulate everyone involved,” he stated.
The first prize for the Masters Over-50 is $200,000, while the runners-up will receive $50,000. The ‘man-of-the-match’ in the final will receive a trophy, and the ‘man-of-the-series’ will receive a 50″ 4k Smart TV valued at $120,000.
