Guyana’s 400m indoor record holder; Arinze Chance, during a recent interview with Kaieteur Sport, shared his opinion that this nation stands a good chance of medaling at international track meets if relays are taken more seriously. In addition, he posited that the relay events can help build an athlete’s moral and give them confidence going forward.
The recent South Carolina graduate, who has qualified for the World Indoor Championships that is slated to be run off in China from March 19-21 next year, shared his optimism of Guyana doing well in the men’s 4x400m event specifically, but opined that the Golden Arrowhead is well capable of putting up a dangerous men’s 4x100m team with the quick feet of Akeem Stewart, Davin Fraser, Emanuel Archibald and Owen Adonis making up the core.
However, his advocacy for more participation in relays by Guyana is based on the fact that it can be a good learning curve for upcoming athletes since the importance of exposure cannot be understated.
Chance underlined the point that most of the world’s leading athletes don’t usually compete in the world indoor championships; which will be one of the first major events in 2021, and proposed that the local sprinters should be afforded the opportunity to compete there in the future.
Chance suggested that a potential Guyana 4x400m team could feature him, Winston George; who has proven to be one of the best in South America, Stephan James and the U.S. based Quamel Prince; Guyana’s 800m record holder.
The 24-year-old posited that he believes qualifying for the 4x400m and 4x100m relay events should be easier than the individual sprints. He noted that, “To qualify for the Tokyo 2021 Olympics, relays just have to be ranked within the top 16 of the world, based on time, and I am almost certain that we have a great chance of achieving such a feat since we have the talent.”
Among the more accessible IAAF certified track meets for Guyanese teams to compete would include the Trinidad & Tobago National Championships and the Penn Relay Championships, while the National Senior Championships and Aliann Pompey Invitational are certified, they don’t usually have sufficient teams to run off any relay events.
In an invited comment, head of the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG); Aubrey Hutson, confirmed that he has been pushing for Guyana’s participation in relay events, especially at the CARIFTA Games, and he revealed that at least one relay team will be headed to the South America Championships which is slated run off in May, 2021.
