Kaieteur News – Malcolm Sonaram, Andrew Arjoon and Jeffrey Yearwood are now Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) accredited Commissaires having been successful at the International Road Commissaire training/ certification Seminar.
The trio successfully completed the 2020 UCI Commissaires online Course in September through the support of COPACI. A Commissaire is the highest ranking cycling race official (A Cycling Umpire).
According to Linden Dowridge, President of the Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF), this puts Guyana in a position to host UCI sanctioned/ranked cycling events (Caribbean/ South American Championships etc).
The trio may also be called upon by the UCI officiate in any UCI sanctioned event internationally. Dowridge extended congratulations to the trio and wished them well.
The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) is the world governing body of cycling. It groups together 190 National Federations. UCI promotes and nurtures everyday cycling which is a core pillar of the UCI’s strategy to ensure that elite cycling acts as a catalyst to inspire even greater mass participation, and get many more people using bikes as part of their everyday lives.
Activities under Cycling for all cover several areas:
• At the political level, the UCI will engage with policy makers to encourage countries and international organisations to adopt bike-friendly policies.
• With the UCI Bike City label, the UCI is rewarding and working with cities and regions that invest in elite cycling and everyday cycling activities;
• The UCI is developing a UCI Cycling for All Ambassadors programme to work with professional riders on cycling advocacy campaigns;
• With the UN Sustainable Development Goals in place, the UCI will push cycling as a tool for sustainable and inclusive development;
• The UCI will support its National Federations, sharing best practice and encourage their cycling for all activities.
