Kaieteur News – Deron Aldwyn Adams is Region 10’s newest Chairman. He was officially sworn in on Monday.
Adams has committed to work with his councillors towards the growth and development of the Region.
But long before all this, Adams had always been working with, and supporting residents, especially Youths and seniors.
He previously served as the People’s National Congress Reform (PNC/R’)s Chairman in Region 10; Managing Director of Corporate Supplies and Coordinator of the ICT workshops in Region 10.
Describing himself as a hard-working and competent individual, Adams believes that success isn’t just about what you accomplish in life, but it is also about what you inspire others to do!
Given his track record, especially as it relates to youths and how he has inspired them, it is obvious that our Regional Chairman knows what he’s saying.
Adams served as chairman for the PNC/R in Region 10 from January to November 2018 and as Councillor with the Linden Mayor and Town Council, during the same period.
Reflecting on his leadership skills, he posited, “As a leader I try to be objective and try to arrive at the best possible solutions. At all times, I must exemplify good citizenship and one that promotes a cooperative spirit, while keeping our people and other vulnerable groups’ perspectives in mind.”
For him, it is of paramount importance, to provide good leadership, and effectively manage the affairs of the town.
A Champion of community development, Adams pointed out, that this could only become a reality through Education, training, sports and job creation.
Towards this end, he was instrumental in launching the “Catch Up” Literary Initiative.
The programme, which is being facilitated by Teacher Sheliza Pile is geared at boosting children’s reading and writing skills, through reading, playing games, and engaging them in other related activities in the Literacy lessons.
In a recent interview, Adams detailed his life’s journey to the current time, beginning with his first business, owner/CEO of Corporate Supplies, which he launched at the age of 24.
He reminisced, “My first order was a drum set that I supplied to a church right here in Linden.”
That was just the beginning of bigger and better things to come.
Earlier this year, following years of dedication and hard-work, Adams became the recipient of the Small Business Bureau (SBB), Techno Business Award of the year.
He copped the coveted award, from amongst a pool of entrepreneurs from across the country.
Corporate Supplies, Adams said, started out as a regular internet cafe, offering basic document services, but eventually evolved into a safe haven for the general public, particularly students who could not afford internet services.
As an entrepreneur, Adams has spearheaded several ICT workshops, and was responsible for the launching of the Linden Youth Network, which engages youths in ICT programmes, after they would have graduated.
EARLY DAYS
Adams, a born and bred Retrieve, Linden resident, grew up in the Church where his father pastored.
His father is his chief role model, he said.
“My dad is a man of integrity he’s honest and so he is my mentor.”
Adams told a story of how he questioned why his father did not own a car, while employed in a senior position in the purchasing Department of Linmine.
His father’s answer, he said, instilled in him, how one should never compromise one’s integrity for material gain.
According to Adams, his father told him stories of how persons would have attempted to bribe him, by throwing car keys on his desk, and offered him money, and how he would have advised them, that such tactics would not work with him and that the only way that they would qualify as bidders was if they met the criteria.
“He’s my advisor…he always encourages me to do what is right,” Adams said of his father.
He said too that he intends to always live by those values, and will never compromise himself in anyway because of greed or ambition.
Adams credits the Church with allowing him the opportunity, to explore his musical talent.
“I play the acoustic drums, keyboard and the guitar…. I have a passion for music. As such, it is my hope that soon we will be able to explore the possibilities of establishing a music school here in the region.”
He added that he wants to ensure that by the time he demits Office, there would be a place where people could go to learn music, and ultimately be employed in the entertainment industry. He cited the number of opportunities that could accrue as a result, including but not limited to, jobs on cruise ships and within the tourism sector.
Adams has served on the Republic Bank’s Customer Support Panel and assisted with preparing and presenting business solutions to automate manual activities.
He is presently a Xerox sales agent for Xerox Copiers, Florida.
COMMUNITY SUPPORT
The ‘adopt a grand friend initiative’, a brainchild of Adams, was established in 2018 to support Senior Citizens.
According to Adams, this involves preparing Hampers and birthday cakes for some of the most vulnerable Senior Citizens so that they would not feel left out.
“We believe that caring for those who once cared for us, is the greatest honour, so we created the programme to ensure that leaders, councillors and other prominent people in the community, could adopt Senior Citizens and give support. We provide hampers and we bake cakes for their birthdays and take it to them and also engage in a number of other initiatives that benefit them.”
A passionate youth advocate, Adams has made representation to a number of sponsors both overseas and locally, in his quest to acquire sporting gears for those involved in sports.
Thanks to his efforts, soon cricket and football gears and two basketball backboards, along with lights, will be handed over to youths in the Retrieve area.
He is optimistic, that through their involvement in sports, youths will become more focused in academics and thus achieve higher grades.
This would eventually result, in a lower drop-out rate and by extension a lower crime rate in Region 10, Adams reasoned.
Our new Regional Chairman was responsible for collaborating with others to purchase house lots for Region 10 athletes: Daniel Williams, Deshauna Skette and Chantoba Bright.
“I always encourage youths to be innovative. If you don’t like something, change it; if you can’t change it, change the way you think about it!”
GRATITUDE
According to Adams, “I’m grateful to all those persons who played a part in me being the person I am today. I’m genuinely concerned about our people. I’m very concerned about our social and economic well-being.”
Just last week, he said, “I met a mother and her two-year-old baby that needs heart surgery and immediately I made representation.”
Adams said too, “I engaged many of the donors and folks in the diaspora to support the baby because I want to leave an impression and impact people’s lives. I want to hear their stories so that I can craft policies that would fix issues that affect our people.”
With regard to education and empowerment, Adams has given tangible support to health workers, through the timely donation of books to the Charles Rosa School Library. He also, quite recently, handed over PPEs to frontline workers and others who had complained of insufficient supplies.
His mission, he said, is to serve the Region to the best of his ability in helping it to realise its full potential.
