Kaieteur News – Cops yesterday caught the driver who fled after he struck down two Kaieteur News’ staffers along the Houston East Bank Demerara (EBD) Public Road, on October 13, with his tinted black Nissan Tida Motorcar.
The car was spotted in the early morning hours by traffics ranks operating along the East Bank of Demerara, at the entrance of McDoom. The driver was subsequently escorted in the car to the Ruimveldt Police Station where he was told of the offence.
Kaieteur News was told that man begged to settle the matter and offered to compensate the staffers with $10,000 in cash.
This offer was refused and he was charged for the offence and released on $20,000 bail. He is expected to appear in court on October, 26, 2020.
According to Kaieteur News’ reports, the staffers, Royden Rockliffe, 30, and Clinton Layne, 23, were struck down around 16:45hrs on October 13. At the time of the incident, they were on a work assignment, which saw them travelling on a motorcycle along the western carriageway of the Huston public road.
Rockcliffe, the rider, had said that he felt an impact from behind which caused him to lose control of the bike, which, as a result, fell to the road.
Video footage obtained had shown that Rockliffe and his pillion rider Layne travelling along at a normal rate of speed when the car accelerated suddenly in an attempt to overtake them. As the car was about to pass, it jammed the motorcycle from behind.
The bike fell and skidded for some distance along the roadway with its rider. The pillion rider was thrown off upon impact and landed on his back in the middle of oncoming traffic. The car continued its journey presumably towards Georgetown, without stopping.
Both Rockliffe and Layne received injuries about their bodies and were assisted by persons who witnessed the accident.
