DEAR EDITOR,
A new Shore Base, a private venture to work with Exxon and other oil companies, is going up in Vreed-en-Hoop. The public must be informed about this project and any impact it would have on natural habitat as well as on people in the environment. An environmental disaster is potentially in the making – oil pollutants will be spilled in the river affecting fishing for hundreds of miles. The public is deserving of answers to many questions on this project and other undertakings.
Is the new Shore Base on government reserve? In the past, the PPP government under then Minister Benn bulldozed peoples’ property on government reserve. Will this Shore Base be bulldozed? Who acquired that land on that reserve? How? Why is the new Shore Base there? Who are the owners of this new Shore Base? Who funds it? Is it true that a man recently appointed in the Foreign Ministry, a primary owner in partnership with some Ministers? Who is he really fronting for because he also set up a company in Houston and has an oil company in Guyana?
I also see Winston Brassington is back in Guyana? In what capacity is he here? Is he being employed by the government? We all remembered what happened when he headed NICIL.
Why is Brassington back? When others fought for restoration of democracy, he went to live in Miami. Is he supervising the new Shore Base? Is he part owner of it? Is he the person who will have to give approval for all new investments in Guyana?
If he is on government payroll, what is his salary? Is it true he is getting US$12K monthly?
Is his home on Barrack Street being rented by the government? For how much? Is it US$10K monthly? Is this any different from the fake drug bond of the previous regime that benefited Singh? Is this new government rental being used as Brassington’s office and residence as he works for government?
Why was Shore Base denied approval under the coalition to establish an office in Vreed-en-Hoop? Did Dr. Vincent Adam deny the approval? Is that one reason why he was removed as head of EPA so that approval can be granted for the Shore Base? Why has the new government given approval for this Shore Base so quickly – in a couple weeks? It takes many months to do a proper impact study of a project? Was a study done by government? Was there an environmental impact study? Was there public consultation? Will this new Shore Base facility affect the flow of the Demerara River? How many lives would be affected in the surrounding area? This Shore Base would definitely impact on the fishing industry. How would fishermen make a living after the project takes effect?
It would be an environmental disaster in the making to have more wharves jutting out into the river with large ships moored alongside severely restricting flow of the river. Siltation of the river mouth would increase exponentially. Wouldn’t it be better to execute such a project along the East Coast or further down the West Coast away from the river mouth or in West Berbice coastline away from the Berbice River.
Are all the major corrupt players back in business? Is the support for PPP in 2020 a passport to continue where they left off in May 2015? How are the Guyanese people going to benefit?
Separately, it is reported that David Patterson has resigned from Parliament? Why? Has he earned and saved enough from his job?
Yours truly,
Shawn Simmons
