Kaieteur News – Almost four months after a 23-year-old man was killed in an alleged drag race on Saffon Street, Georgetown, the driver of the container truck that was involved in the accident, on Wednesday released on $300,000, bail for causing death by dangerous driving.
The defendant, Eric Kennedy, 22, a porter of Lot 153 West Ruimveldt, Georgetown, was arraigned before the Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Kaieteur News had reported that based on video footage seen, the truck driver had jumped a major road causing the deadly crash.
Kennedy is being represented by attorney-at-law, Bernard Da Silva.The defendant was not required to plead to the indictable charge which stated that on May 26, 2020, at the intersection of Saffon and Sussex Streets Charlestown, Georgetown, he drove in a manner dangerous to the public, hereby causing the death of Terry Dhanraj, 23, of 33 Ogle, Railway Embankment, East Coast Demerara.
According to a police report, on May 25, 2020, around 17:45hrs, Dhanraj was a passenger of motor vehicle PSS 1314, which was being driven by Stephon Pearson.
Pearson was proceeding north along Saffon Street allegedly at a fast rate when the container truck which was being driven by Kennedy allegedly intercepted his path.
It was also reported that the car clip the rail of a bridge before slamming into the trailer of the truck. Pearson was able to free himself from the wreck but a badly injured Dhanraj remained trapped in the front seat.
Two ambulances arrived shortly after and took both men to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation where Dhanraj was said to be in a critical condition.
As was feared, Dhanraj passed away on May 26, 2020, around 13:00hrs due to the extent of his injuries while Pearson was discharged from the hospital with a broken arm and multiple lacerations to the body.
Kaieteur News understands that the driver of the car, Pearson, was also charged for cause of death by dangerous driving.
The Chief Magistrate granted Kennedy bail and the matter was adjourned to October 7th, 2020.
